“To be fast – the primary goal of any performance motorcycle”

In 2014, Ducati sought to achieve the largest weight reduction possible, and to exceed the limits of performance, and that is precisely what they did. At 200 + horsepower, and 155kg dry (166kg wet with no fuel) the superleggera, or ‘superlight’ weighed the same as the production year’s factory WSB racer, and with comparable power output, this resulted in the highest power to weight ratio of any production motorcycle at the time. Garnished with exotic materials as far as the eye could see, this machine was a road legal track weapon with ABS, mirrors, lights, and long standard maintenance intervals, whilst also being capable of lapping Mugello in just 1:54.9 (to put this into perspective, the Motogp Lap record is 1:47.6).
Based on the Homologation special this Ducati pushed the boundaries set by the 1199 Panigale R by incorporating a magnesium monocoque frame, forged magnesium wheels, a carbon-fiber rear sub-frame, carbon-fiber bodywork, a full titanium exhaust with stainless-steel headers, and a lithium-ion battery (LIB). Besides these parts, to save further weight Ducati added many titanium bolts and fasteners. Reducing weight even further, the 1199 R’s engine, the Superquadro 90 degree V-Twin, which already used titanium connecting rods and inlet valves, was fitted with titanium exhaust valves.
This Superquadro featured something never done before on a Ducati engine; it utilised only two piston rings. Speaking of the two-ring pistons, Ducati said “these pistons, usually found on racing Superbikes, use short skirts and only two rings (compression and oil), allowing them to dramatically reduce mass and friction”. To further increase performance, the combustion chamber was also modified to Superbike specs by a new piston crown that increased compression ratio. Added to this was a super-lightened crankshaft (to the tune of 396g), precision balanced using dense tungsten inserts.
To add to the mechanical weight savings and performance enhancements, this Ducati was graced with the most complex electronics package available to the Italian marque at the time, comprising of Ducati Wheelie Control (DWC), Ducati Traction Control (DTC) and Engine Brake Control (EBC). These systems were also optimised with the new automatic calibration of rear-tire size and final transmission ratio. Also added was a race-derived, handlebar mount to easily adjust the levels of these systems on the track. The 1199 Superleggera also featured Ducati Data Analysis+ (DDA+) system, which added an additional sensor and software channel to record and display vehicle lean angles.
Keeping the Pirello Diablo Supercorsas in touch with the tarmac were Ohlins FL916 front suspension with fully-machined fork bottoms, and an Ohlins TTX36 rear suspension with titanium spring, shrouded by a wonderfully crafted carbon fibre. Stopping the Superleggera was left to Brembo M50 Monoblock brakes with a racing-style MCS 19-21 front master cylinder and remote adjuster.
Finishing off this beautiful Panigale was a coating of Ducati Corse Red, a livery which in many places stopped just shy of the edges of the bodywork, revealing the carbon fibre beneath.

Moto Classica Limited is very proud to offer for sale an example of this extreme motorcycle, with amazing attributes that make this bike as fit for a collection, as it is the track.
