1983 Peugeot 205 T16 Group B Street Version For Sale
Under the management of Jean Todt, the factory Peugeot 205 Turbo 16s (T16) rally cars were the most successful cars of the late Group B era, becoming constructors and drivers champions in 1985 and 1986 driven by Timo Salonen and Juha Kankkunen respectively.
Peugeot were required to build 200 roadgoing versions for homologation to compete in the World Rally Championship (WRC). Not surprisingly the roadgoing T16 had little in common with the workaday production 205 and instead shared the transverse mid-engine, four-wheel drive layout of the rally car along with wide wheel arches, huge air scoops and a rear clamshell section which lifted up to give full access to the engine compartment.
The engine was a 1.8 turbocharged four cylinder unit based on the cast iron diesel block of the XU family but with a 16 valve head. The homologation car motor produced 197 horsepower and was mounted where the rear seats would normally be. Transmission was via 4 wheel drive (power was adjustable front to rear) with epicyclic centre differential and viscous coupling system and the gearbox was a modified Citroen XM unit mounted transversely.
Construction was based on a very stiff tubular design and the body was built under contract by Heuliez from heavily modified standard three door monocoques. The rear of the standard bodyshells was cut off and replaced with a firewall that was welded in between the B-pillars. The rear frame comprised sheet steel and tubes and more tubes carried the front suspension. The completed road car bodies were delivered to Simca (Talbot) for completion. All road versions were left hand drive and finished in grey with two-tone grey interior except the first car which was white with rally decals.
By virtue of its competition dominance, the T16 is one of the ultimate rally-bred homologation specials from the 1980’s and we are delighted to present this incredible example for sale. Finished in Dark Grey but with the T16 exclusive grey leather/ cloth insert interior, this example is understood to have been built from a spare bodyshell. Purchased by the current owner in 2008 the odometer reading then was just seven kilometres, now with 2,900kms displayed it is in lovely order visually and technically.
In search of something more invigorating than the ‘standard’ T16, the goal was to bring the performance more in line with the competition brethren that belittled the other manufacturers during the pinnacle of Group B. Great effort was spent accumulating an array of genuine upgrade parts, either those that formed part of the PTS (Peugeot Talbot Sport) ‘kit’ (which when new was the same price as the base car again!) or some works rally parts. The PTS Kit was what customer teams used to upgrade their cars for competition use in Group B rallying and due to the cost of the upgrades this was very rarely deployed.
This superb car is now effectively a PTS Kit specification T16 albeit in road car disguise. It has the PTS Kit brake system with vented discs on bells and enlarged callipers, the improved manifold and exhaust system, uprated pedal box and even the PTS ‘semi’ Dry Sump setup for the engine. Suspension was taken a step further as it is on Proflex shocks all round that have been tailored to the geometry of the car to ensure optimal handling and the 16 inch (period) Speedline alloys perfect the look. The engine was treated to a LIFE ECU upgrade by Geoff Page Racing and this involved considerable re-engineering in order to change the fuel injection setup and all of the associated sensors required to optimise operation. Power is now quoted as ‘above 300bhp’ and this mated to a super-rare ‘Evo 2’, 6 speed, Magnesium-cased gearbox makes it really go. Fitted with a Lifeline Zero 360 fire suppressant system, deep dish steering wheel and TRS harnesses it is poised for action and indeed it has been quite a force to be reckoned with on the few track days is has enjoyed.
Included with the car is an Owner’s Handbook, Technical Description, Workshop repair manual, PTS Kit Brochure/ Parts list and an original (standard T16 steering wheel). It should be regarded as not currently UK registered but this is in process.
This T16 is a league apart from others in our opinion. On the button and offering very enthusiastic performance this has to be the best T16 to suit the true driving enthusiast currently available; priced very fairly, please call for further details.
