Model 599 HGTE
The heart of any Ferrari is its engine, and the 599's 48-valve, 6.0-litre V12 was a reworked version of that found in the Enzo supercar. Developed as part of Ferrari's Formula 1 program, the paddle shift gearbox had become a feature of its range-topping sports cars and was available in its latest form for the 599, capable of changing gear in a mere 100 milliseconds. Although active suspension had long been banned from Formula 1, its development for road cars had continued and the 599 came equipped with SCM magnetorheological 'semi-active' dampers. The latter's damping fluid changes in viscosity almost instantaneously when a magnetic field is applied, thereby altering the suspension characteristics. Damper controls were placed on the Formula 1-style steering wheel together with those for traction control and stability, as was the starter button. The 599's fortunate driver would find him/herself looking at a central analogue rev counter flanked by a similar speedometer and an electronic display screen for all other functions. Ferrari thoughtfully provided plentiful storage space within the sumptuous leather-trimmed interior.
The already awesome 599 GTB was labelled as one of the best handling tourers of its time. With one of the greatest engines ever built, the 611 horsepower Enzo engine, many were quick to assume that it couldn't get much better. Announced in 2009 the HGTE was released not as a lightweight variant but more simply as an evolution of the GTB. 'HGTE' stands for Handling Gran Turismo Evoluzione, but in hardware terms this stands for a lot more. The optional package which cost £14,000 includes stiffer springs front and rear, a meatier rear anti-roll bar, a 0.4in drop in ride height, half a degree more negative camber at the front and five-spoke, three-spoke wheels, half an inch wider than before at the front. The magnetic dampers have been recalibrated to act more aggressively and the change time of the F1 paddle-shift transmission has been reduced to 85 milliseconds when the manettino dial is switched to 'Race'. Other changes to the car include new grilles, more aggressive exhaust system and a carbon fibre package which occupies the interior and a seat design unique to the HGTE.
Finished in the classic Ferrari colour scheme of Rosso Corsa with a Tan Leather interior, this impressive example has covered a mere 10,000 miles from new. The 599 is supplied with a detailed service history with 8 stamps recorded, featuring more recent works by UK dealers Joe Macari and H.R.Owen. Importantly this particular 599 benefits from the desirable Handling GTE (Handling Gran Turismo Evoluzione) package as specified above.
Offered with both keys and the relevant book pack, this is a fine low mileage example of a simply awesome Ferrari for modern times.
