‘Spectacular track inspired Panigale aimed at racers and collectors’
The R models in Ducati’s range have always been extraordinary, and the Panigale 1199R continues the tradition. The 1198cc, Superquadro race-bred engine features titanium inlet valves and con rods to minimise inertia, while Ducati have worked hard to reduce internal frictional losses too. It features a huge bore and very short stroke (112mm x 60.8mm), race style twin ring pistons with specially developed crowns, lightened crank and flywheel, and on top of all this, dedicated cams and timing. This all contributes to a claimed peak power of 202bhp. The immense engine with reduced inertia spins up with lighting speed, making the rider question whether this really is a V-twin. The torque is no less impressive either, 100.5ftlb, delivered at 10,250rpm: this isn’t an engine that’s been developed with the road in mind. Peak power arrives at 11,500rpm which is 1000rpm higher than the 1299 Panigale.
The acceleration has been described as nothing less than brutal on the lightened 189kg (wet) machine, so much so that it upsets your mental rhythms. The exhaust note is in-keeping with this, exhilarating. Whilst obviously road legal, the full titanium Akrapovic system isn’t exactly quiet, with larger pipes than the proceeding 1299, carbon fibre end caps and boasting a weight loss of 2.5kg over the previous version.
This is the epitome of homologation specials, and a true collector’s bike. Garnished with the best parts money can buy and carbon fibre extras, it makes all other bikes seem invisible when it is sat next to them. The chassis is specially developed for this model, with an adjustable swing-arm pivot to fine tune set up for different tracks and grip conditions. The electronics have been revered by all who have tested these phenomenally powerful bikes; saying that they’re so good they don’t hinder the bike’s performance, or your fun, sighting a complete absence of backfiring or spluttering when the traction control kicks in.
The list of rider aids is massive and exactly what you’d expect from a range-topping superbike: EBC (Engine Brake Control), DQS (Ducati Quick-Shift and auto-blipper), DWC (Ducati Wheelie Control), DTC (Ducati Traction Control) with IMU (Internal Measurement Unit) and cornering ABS. The IMU is the multi-axial brain that ties all these systems together and works with the Bosch braking systems to give a level of control and safety that anyone who isn’t blessed with the skill of a world superbike ace, will be glad of.
This MKII shows off Ducati’s visionary design of the Panigale in incredible fashion, with part red, part exposed lacquered aluminium tank, white ‘number plate’ style nose and tail sections all accentuated by the carbon fibre protected yellow Ohlins TTX shock absorber and gorgeous golden forks.
