The MGA signified the beginning of a new era for BMC's MG sportscars. The body was an evolution of Syd Enever's design of TD Le Mans race car featuring a lower seating position and center of gravity. The engine originally intended for production was substituted with the underpowered Magnette saloon derived B-series 1.5lt SOHC motor. In the following years, the capacity of the SOHC engine was raised to 1.6 lt while a second DOHC engine was offered. Despite all efforts, the SOHC plants remained at 81bhp, not a match for the race-bred nature of the chassis while the DOHC suffered from detonation and reliability issues and was discontinued. Long after production ended, numerous enthusiasts and engineers decided to address the issue by enhancing MGA's sportsmanship. The task entailed not simply raising the power but also upgrading the suspension, drivetrain and body. In 1998 a Bedfordshire-based restoration house did take up the challenge and created a formidable one-off MGA that featured a handcrafted lightweight aluminum widebody and a Rover V8 motor. In addition, performance car specialists Gerry Hawkridge, director of Hawk Cars and John Hoyle of Hoyle Engineering paired up to design a proper front suspension upgrade for an MGA suitable for advanced track and road use.
The MGA featured here was produced in 1961 as a 1600 A roadster and thereon imported in Greece. Ten years later it was sold to a race car collector and enthusiast who decided to conduct a restoration that included upgrading the engine, suspension, drivetrain and body. More specifically, an overhauled 2.0lt Cosworth 205 YBB engine was selected to deliver 105bhp via a 5-speed manual transmission and a LSD to the rear wheels. A Hoyle Engineering suspension kit was imported and installed along with a Ford Escort English rear axle providing for precision handling. A specially ordered handcrafted widebody kit was also imported from the UK and fitted with care. In turn, the exterior was finished in gunmetal grey and the interior trimmed in matching grey leather. The overall result is a mesmerizing blend of elegance and aggression capable of impeccable performance both on the track and road.
