| | | | 1970 ROVER P5B SALOON, ADMIRALTY BLUE: £7750
Rover P5b saloon, Admiralty Blue, 8700mls and first registered November 1970. This is, for the price, a quite stunning unmolested example of one of the UK’s finest saloon cars.
The car has been lovingly looked after from new and, from what I have seen whilst working on it, maintained to a very high standard throughout its life. I purchased and recommissioned the car late last year after it had been placed into storage when the last owner went into sheltered accommodation. After replacing the coil, the car pretty much started on the button the day I recovered it and has continued to do so ever since. It has that wonderful V8 woofle and is a delight to drive – silky gearchange, docile in traffic and magic to pilot! The chrome work is superb and the bodywork, overall, is stunningly original; albeit displaying a couple of small areas which will need attention in the future. These minor blemishes do not detract at all from the car’s overall presentation.
The bodywork underneath is exceptional and has never been near a welding set. Mechanically, the car has a fresh MOT. To complete the recommissioning work, I have replaced the exhaust system (mild steel), all the coolant hoses, replaced the radiator, overhauled the braking system (replacing the rear wheel cylinders, brake shoes and pads, all flexible hoses and the metal rear brake pipes) and the engine has received a full service; plus a plethora of other minor jobs that were sorted as they arose. The interior is also quite superb, with no tears or rips, however, the driver’s seat squab does show some patina from years of use, plus the original carpets are still in very good condition. A full list of recommissioning work will be provided.
In terms of detailed history: the car has lived in the North East all its life and has had two long term custodians. It comes with a substantial amount of history from the date of initial purchase, updated by the second owner, and then to me. The car was a company car until 1978 and then the previous owner looked after the car from 1978 until I purchased the car from his estate last year after his death.
For those loving and wanting a Rover P5b, this is a unique opportunity to purchase a superb starter classic that has wonderful provenance and will continue to give many, many years of faithful service. There is a genuine reason for selling this car: I bought it as a ‘keeper’ and the only reason I’m selling it is because I’ve had the opportunity to purchase an even better ’72 coupe, which I also recommissioned last year for a friend.
