The BMW E3 was part of the Neue Klasse range, these included the E9 (Coupe), E10 (1602-2002) and the smaller saloons 1800 and 2000.
The E3 was also known as the limousine range, production ran from 1968 to 1977 and included E3 2800, 2800L, 3.0S, 3.0SI and 3.3LIA.
Father and son have always been E3 fanatics, The first 2500A in his ownership in 1977, was the car three years old and I was ten years old!
Twenty seven years later in June 2004 Dad Bought this 2500A finished in Reseda Green and at the same time I owned a 1974 E3 3.0si in Fjord Blue, and so there we were at last with one each.
This E3 2500 automatic was among the last of the production run.
With Mum & Dad now retired and living in Cornwall, the car was being used less and less and in October 2013, he drove it back up to Sussex and left it with me.
The paintwork and brightwork looked tired and a full restoration commenced. The E3 was striped and fully restored, no real structural work was needed, but the work included floor pans, boot floor & sills. All four door shells and the bonnet were replaced with excellent used panels from Linwar Motors. The interior is pearl beige cloth and just required a deep clean, this included the original carpets.
Mechanically the engine and drive train are spot on, a later type cylinder head was fitted last year. I have complete confidence in the car mechanically and have made several trips to Cornwall and back, Gaydon (Warwickshire) etc. The mileage is approaching 90000, I have probably used it in my ownership far more than Dad ever did. The suspension is E12 M535i coil springs with Bilstein shocks all round.
I have lots of history for the E3, it has 5 former keepers including my Dad, I have every receipt since in my ownership and many prior to that. The majority of MOTs dating back to 1989 are present. BCX 787R comes with a choice two sets of period alloy wheels, 14" BBS Marle or 14" Cromodora alloys with chrome centre caps.
Nearly five years years after the restoration the E3 is still show condition, it has two stable mates, an unrestored and immaculate E28 528i and a fully restored E12 M535i. The E3 is MOT & Tax exempt, although an MOT test is provided every year to ensure the car is still tip top and records the accuracy of the mileage.
So this brings me neatly to the reason to let someone else enjoy the E3, my daughter is now driving age, her car has joined our two e39s on an already crowded driveway and my son is coming up eleven and wants me to embark on a classic project for him, With three cars in the garage, something has to give, anyone that knows anything about classic cars realises that they must be kept in a dry garage.
BCX 787R has an agreed insurance value of £25000, however I am realistic and open to sensible offers, as you can tell it is as important to me that the E3 goes to the right owner.
For a long time now we have been struggling to supply E28 M5s to an ever growing list of customers keen to get their hands on BMWs ultimate super saloon. With only 187 European right hand drive examples.....
