1964 Glas S 1004 For Sale by Auction

To Be OFFERED AT AUCTION WITHOUT RESERVE at RM Sothebys' Essen event, 26 - 27 March 2020. Fun little coupe just two owners from new; retained by its original owner for 54 yearsDelivered new to Italy and restored in its original SeegrünAn ideal and rare first collector car with only 78, 000 km from new Forty-one horsepower may not sound like a lot, particularly in comparison to super saloons and hot hatchbacks produced in abundance in 2020, which often boast ten times more power. However, it’s more than enough when the car being powered with rear-wheel drive is both small and light. The novel 41 bhp engine powering this Glas S 1004 was developed by Leonhard Ischinger, who had joined Glas from BMW. It is a four-cylinder OHC engine with valve gear driven using a toothed rubber cam belt—this was the first car on the market to utilise this feature. This Glas S 1004 was one of very few cars thought to be sold new in Italy and was delivered in 1964 to lawyer Francesco Preta. It was to remain with his family near the old city of Ascoli Piceno until 2018 (an incredible 54-year period of ownership), when it was acquired and subjected to an extensive restoration. This Glas S 1004 retains its original Italian documentation and its original white-on-black number plates, as well as two original keys. The restoration included both mechanical and cosmetic work, with the original bodywork repainted in its original aquamarine, retaining as much originality as possible throughout the process. An unusual sight in Italy, this car featured in a number of magazine tests, including Routeclassiche, which listed it as one of five cars not to be missed when presented at an exhibition in Milan. This fun little coupe can be enjoyed anywhere and every day, making full use of the diminutive engine’s power, especially considering that some of these cars were rallied in period. It would make an excellent first step into the world of classic cars. To view this car and others currently consigned to this auction, please visit the RM website at rmsothebys. com/ en/ auctions/ es20.
