PGV616 is a 1961 model year Series II 88 petrol model with optional cab, recirculating Smiths heater/demister unit and spare wheel carrier on bonnet. Supplied to Mr. Mitcham, a Suffolk cereal farmer who kept the vehicle for forty-one years.

Recorded on the factory ledger:
Chassis No: the details below
Line No: 177
Colour: Bronze Green
Into Despatch: 8 September 1960
Out of Despatch: 23 September 1960
Destination (Dealer): Crisswell's, Newmarket.

I acquired the vehicle in 2014 and carried out thorough, sympathetic restoration, featured in Winter 2016 Series II Club Magazine. Inspected by The Club Vehicle Registration Officer in support of my application to reacquire the original registration; PGV616 is totally original, as it came out of the factory in 1960, with all numbered and date-stamped mechanical components, including engine, gearbox, transfer box, axles, propshafts, steering box, radiator, wheels, tailgate and all body panels, glass, lighting and instruments.

Matching numbers:
Chassis: the details below
Engine: the details below
Gearbox: K07366

Rear Axle: the details below
Steering Box: H460
Front and Rear Differentials: T60

Wiper Motor: 6-60
Distributor: 760

It is vanishingly rare to find a vehicle in such condition and it has been used as a reference for other SII restorations by Club members. The chassis was professionally inspected and repaired using Richards Chassis parts. The bulkhead also needed very little work and was professionally repaired. The chassis, axles and bulkhead were re-painted using electrox primer, 2-pack epoxy mastic and injected with rust proofing cavity wax. The originally unpainted underside of the body still bears the alodine protection and factory overspray. It was and is remarkably free of galvanic corrosion.

The mechanical overhaul included rebuilding the front and rear axles. The chrome swivels, one UJ and all seals were replaced. All braking and suspension components renewed, including Girling/AP cylinders, Automec lines and Goodridge hoses. The engine and transfer box just required new core plugs, seals and gaskets.

Meticulous attention has been paid to the bodywork to retain the original wear and tear from weathering and forty-one years on a Suffolk farm. The bulkhead, tub and radiator panel have been professionally re-sprayed. The original paint restored to blend old and new. The alloy skins on the door tops, with their paint worn away by an elbow out of the window, were carefully transferred to new frames. It is a beautiful and incredibly original vehicle which is very hard to find and near impossible to create.

The vehicle still has the original positive earth dynamo setup with replacement Autosparks braided wiring harnesses. Many replacement parts have ensured reliable operation including a rebuilt Solex carburettor. There are endless small details such as the use of genuine Land Rover door seals, double wire hose clips, period Avon Traction Mileage tyres and retaining the factory finish on as many components as possible in order to avoid an over-restored appearance.

Complete with the boxed literature pack with owner's manual and free service card, Shelley jack and starting handle. Two previous owners. Exempt from MOT and road tax. 53,787 miles, increasing slowly from weekend use.

Fully serviced with engine, gearbox, transfer box and axle oils, brake fluid and spark plugs replaced. It drives as you would expect from such an exceptional, low mileage vehicle.

Viewing is recommended to fully appreciate the condition and originality. If you have any questions, then please ask.
