The evolution of the Porsche 911 into the 997 was more evolutionary than revolutionary as it was with its predecessor the 996. The exterior underwent a redesign, bringing back some of the styling elements of the old classic 911's last seen with the 993. Most prominent was the return of classic circular headlights and the typical waist at the rear of the car. Although the rest of the design of the car wasn't changed that evidently, the 996 and the 997 only shared the same roof panel. This redesign was greatly appreciated by enthusiasts all around the world, who also supported that they were clearly distinguishable between the "independent" 997 911 and the Boxster/Cayman model.
The 997 is the most commercially successful 911 of all time, having sold 100,000 units of the first generation alone between its introduction in 2005 and July 2007. It has also received mostly positive reviews from the worldwide motoring press; even British motoring journalist Jeremy Clarkson, a known detractor of Porsche cars, noted that the 997 will "make love to your fingertips and stir your soul." The 911 GT1's engine provided the inspiration for the 997 Turbo's 473bhp, 3.8-litre, turbocharged flat six with a dry sump. Interestingly, this model was the first production Porsche to feature two BorgWarner VTG Turbochargers, which resulted in reduced turbo lag at low speeds due to the guide vanes on the turbo wheel.
