First seen on a handful of late coach built Bentley R Types, Park Ward’s handsome Continental Drophead Coupe coachwork was successfully carried over to the new 1955 S-series six-cylinder S1 Continental (and new sibling Rolls-Royce Silver Cloud) models become one of the most elegant cars ever to carry the Bentley badge. Like the R Type which it replaced, the Bentley S-series was based around a moderately modified S1 saloon chassis, which was always clothed in a sleeker and sportier coach built style. The most desirable catalogued body style on the S1 Continental chassis was this drophead coupe by Park Ward. Unlike most Bentley convertibles produced in this era, this style was not an ‘adaptation ‘from factory design stampings but rather a full custom body, delivered new to Kemsley Newspapers Ltd in September 1958.
Almost all continentals were built under special order and, as such, were and continue to be highly valued by collectors. Only 431 S1 Continental cars were built, compared to 3,072 standard steel-bodied cars. Of those 431 chassis, 185 were fitted with Park Ward bodies.
In the last decade the car has been owned by a prominent collector and expert, who in their own right has maintained the car without regard for expense.
A graceful car on offer, it’s comfortable and effortlessly to drive, completed with power steering, air conditioning and electric windows. This stunning car is finished in metallic blue with beige hide.
