1990 Austin Cooper S MK1 / ITALIAN JOB recreation. For Sale
Based on a 1990 Rover Mini Studio 2 this is a Mk1 Austin Cooper S recreation or with the addition of stripes and lamps it's a recreation of the original Italian Job blue mini. Taking a one owner car in Dec 2015 the previous owner subjected it to a full bare shell restoration. Fitted with 60% all new panels and given a bare shell respray in correct Island Blue this was then treated to powder coated subframes, full 10" wheel and brake conversion, new brake lines and suspension etc. While the body was being prepared it was modified for functional external door hinges and the bottom front of the doors modified to mimic a genuine Mk1. New panels to accommodate Mk1 rear lights were fitted along with a conversion to sliding windows. New upholstery was fitted and the dash was converted to 130mph centre speedo and extra gauges. Door pockets are fitted inside to mimic Mk1 inner doors and gives you something to pull the doors shut and a cup holder. Lastly the grille, and over riders and moustaches were added along with Austin Cooper S front and rear badging. After I acquired the mini I purchased a 36000 mile MG metro with service history to transplant the 1275 engine. This has a big valve head and is similar in power to an original S. This benefits from an alternator and electronic ignition and also the servo and dual circuit brakes of the standard mini. Somerford Mini then supplied a full stage 1 kit including Maniflow LCB and twin silencer centre exit exhaust, cone air filter and jet. Further to this it has now been fitted with genuine Hi-Lo adjustable suspension, GAZ lowered adjustable shockers all round and adjustable bottom arms, tie rods and rear adjustable mounting plates all from Mini Spares. Lastly all new Yokohama A008 tyres were fitted. The car was then treated to a full geometry alignment at a local motorsport specialist and then a rolling road tune and set up at mini tuners Slark Race engineering. As you can see I vary the car between original Austin Cooper S replica, add the magnetic white circles and number plate to give the FIA racer look or finally add the spot lamps and bracket and the leather bonnet straps to make a very realistic Italian Job Mini replica. This car actually drove on the films 50th anniversary trip to Turin as one of the three minis complete with the converted coach and there are photographs of this car in some of the iconic film locations. This car obviously drives as it should, has zero rust and is possibly the most realistic looking Mk1 Cooper S recreation available, and at anything up to a third to a quarter of the price of an original. THERE IS ALSO A WHOLE ALBUM OF THE TOTAL RESTORATION OF THIS CAR.
