PORSCHE 930 3.0 TURBO PRODUCTION HISTORY 1975 - 77

In 1975 the original Porsche 911 Turbo was officially released to the public after its headline-making reveal at the IAA in Frankfurt a year previous. However, the story of the 911 Turbo actually begins in 1972 when Louise Piëch was presented with a 2.7 litre narrow-bodied Turbo prototype.

Given as a 70th birthday present, Piëch used the car extensively, proving the forced induction concept that would be made available to customers in 3.0 litre form come 1974.

Internally known as the 930, the original 911 Turbo’s 3.0 litre flat six (hidden underneath the iconic whale tail rear spoiler) developed 260bhp and was mated to a four-speed version of the 915 gearbox.

PRODUCTION TIMELINE

1975 MY: 260bhp 3.0-litre Turbo announced (Oct 1974). All new Type 930/50 engine with new 4-speed gearbox, wide body and (initially) 'whaletail' rear spoiler, but LHD. RHD UK models became available from Sept 1975. Electrically operated driver's door mirror. Turbocharger max boost increased from 0.8 to 1.0 bar. New 6-year anti-corrosion warranty (zinc coated panels used throughout).

1977 MY: Boost gauge in dash for first time, brake servo, 16-inch Fuchs alloys standard. Option M42 Martini limited edition body stripes introduced (GP White cars only, approx 200 worldwide).

Only 2,819 3.0 litre Turbo's were built between 1975-1977, less then 5% were produced in Right Hand Drive!

RESTORATION

This beautifully presented 3.0 Turbo has recently completed an extensive 2 year restoration by Porsche specialists Tech 9, who carried out a full nut and bolt rebuild to exacting standards.

Pre-restoration, the car was in very original condition, albeit showing signs of its age with isolated rust spots and paintwork faults.

Stripped to a bare bodyshell and taken back to bare metal, the bodyshell was jig restored to the highest standards by Porsche approved bodyshop, Road and Race Bolton (Porsche GB restoration partner).

Every effort was taken to restore to original condition using as many of the original parts as possible. The car retains its original carpets (the material NLA) that feature the ‘teddy bear’ long pile. The window trims were retained and feature the incredible patina of the sun faded black anodising, impossible to recreate this finish.

The interior is very special, the combination of the Dark Brown leather matched with the MacLachlan tartan trim, is an iconic feature of these 1970’s 930 Turbo models.

Blaupunkt Bamberg stereo is present and rare to find in this condition, all original switchgear and instruments complete the dash area.

The original numbers match engine, was fully dressed with rebuilt and restored to correct finishes featuring vapour blasting and chromating of magnesium parts. The exhaust has been ceramic coated to give both a cosmetic and durable appearance, mated to a rebuilt original KKK26 Turbocharger

The gearbox retains its original LSD, and the four speed transmission is a joy to operate. You can feel how over-engineered Porsche built this car in the day.

The chassis and drivetrain feature all original parts, including the date match rear arms, and the correctly restored aluminium front brake calipers, and rebuilt Bilstein suspension

The original 16” Fuchs alloys, feature the correct anodised finish and wrapped in a set of Michelin MXX3 tyres, to complete the period correct look

The restoration has been fully documented and presented in a hardback book accompanied by extensive invoice receipts for the works carried out.

This car represents a very rare opportunity to acquire one of the last year of the 3.0 version of the iconic 930 Turbo. Only 36 RHD 3.0 Turbo's were supplied to the UK in 1977.

We believe this to be one of THE BEST RHD examples in the world and is supplied with a comprehensive restoration book, invoice file, original service book and drivers manual.
