On June the 30th 1937, the Great Wal Handley rode a specially prepared BSA Empire Star to a debut race victory at Brooklands and more importantly for this story he was also awarded the Gold Star pin for a 100mph lap. This inspired BSA to produce the Gold Star as a model in its own right and thus started possibly the most successful production motorcycle ever made which remaining in production from 1938 until 1963. The Gold Star not only dominated the Clubman racing scene on the roads but also off-road where the model could be ordered in scrambles, trials and ISDT specification and it cleaned up here too.
The best known and most iconic of the variants built over its long production run was the DBD34. Introduced into the model range in 1956, this 500cc bike came standard with clip-on bars, chrome plated petrol tank, a finned alloy engine with new improved head, swept back exhaust and the famous ‘banana’ seat. This was a racer straight from the factory and once yours, you were the envy of every biker in the country as you emulated your heroes at the TT.
The BSA Gold Star we offer here started life in Movea Paris as a clubman spec CB32 machine where it was first registered on the 6th of September 1956. It had an engine change at some point in its life as it now has DB34 GS 941 in it, which came from another bike that passed through Movea, Paris earlier in 1956. It is certainly possible that the engine was exchanged very early in the machine’s life but as to the exact timing, it is unknown. What we can say is that this bike currently presents very well, runs beautifully and goes like the clappers. It also benefits from a Pearson electric starter. It has its current V5C, and dating details from the Gold Star Owners Club.
The BSA Gold Star is one of the most iconic bikes of its day and this wonderful machine needs only to be ridden for the next lucky owner to be smitten.
