A car that is deemed collectible regardless of age, the T-5, T-5R and R models
were simply cars that changed Volvo forever, with indestructible longevity.
As an ownership proposition these are now totally depreciation proof and are
in truth rising in value quickly due to dwindling availability. The build
quality is legendary, characterful drive and unmistakable pure 90s appeal.
This is a guaranteed future classic and a slim risk four-wheel financial
investment get in fast, manual gearbox models do not come around often.
This R is actually a model within a model. Its a scarcely available specimen
as explained below. To those in the know this is becoming an endangered species,
the M59 manual is night and day to drive against the rest, its an engine
you really are looking for opportunities to open up the taps in, seeking
out those long empty sweeping A roads. This is almost a Unicorn manual
gearbox car now.

First registered and pre delivery inspected by Herbert Robinson Volvo on
19.08.1996. A UK car, not an import, always been on our shores. Owned
for the last 10 years by a gentleman in Scotland who had a collection
of older classics, however, he stopped using it in Summer of 2013 as
his daily car and kept it in his dry storage. It was started regular
and rotated as other cars needed in and out.
I was made aware of it, the rarity of the model and as to how solid an
example it was, the chap was just about to sell some of his cars, it
might need a bit of work though only servicing and consumable’s, could
I be bothered chasing it, the unknown of it?
So, with a new battery it started off the key and sounded healthy and
what I could see of the body and trim told me it was straight and would
respond to love, the panels were rust free and the underside looked
solid and original. Considerable money would need spent just getting
it deeply serviced and through an MOT, there would be surprises along
the way that you never budget for, nevertheless what I had was a very
plausible rare model in front of me. It was bought loaded and transported
to the workshop for appraisal.
Extremely solid and in full working order was the consensus that came
back after a good amount of time on the ramp, never been bumped, a
complete example with completely original factory parts and a very
tidy underside with no areas of deterioration structurally.
All fuel and brake lines in good order. The wheels were removed to allow
access to brakes and suspension, which again was all found to be in
good working order and serviceable. At this stage I was now happy to
proceed with the rest of the recommission.
The oil was changed, the cooling system checked for leaks, flushed and
changed, the brake fluid changed, spark plugs, air filter and fuel filter
all changed. The timing belt had last been changed at 100k so was due again
time wise as this was more than 10 years ago. This was then changed as
well with new roller and tensioner. A new alternator fitted. The water
pump was left alone as it was spinning freely with no noises and no
water seepage. Front pads also replaced as were wearing thin.

Now the car was in a position it could actually be driven, which I had not
done yet. Trade plates on, off I set hoping I had not put the cart before
the horse, only to find the cars gearbox was knackered, or I had a howling
differential, or a knackered Turbo. On a scale of 1 - 10 I would say it was
a 9. The engine is powerful, the gearbox smooth, the clutch bite is correct,
everything is silent on the road with no dramas. The exhaust let the car
down badly mind you which I could see from under the ramp.
A pre-MOT check revealed that the rear tyres were perished, the exhaust
system from cat back was the original part and was coming to the end of
its life. Also, the CV joint boots needed replacing, plus various bulbs.
Tyres changed, new CV boots and bulbs all done, wiper blades replaced,
just the exhaust was left.
I knew from owning a few of these cars that the exhaust system fitted
as standard sounded dull and restricted the engine from being all it
could be, I could have just replaced the faulty component on the
original system and give it a few more years and save my money.
I took the decision to replace the exhaust system with a proper stainless
steel product that would add power sound and character to the car, this
brings the 5 pot alive. At considerable cost a brand-new custom system
has just been fitted, tailored to the car, its now a completely different
car to sit in and to drive.
Finally, with all the workshop work complete it was back to my clean
garage, all 4 wheels stripped off and sent off for refurbishment. I
took the opportunity over the days that lapsed to do a in depth
detailing session, under wheel aches, engine bay, boot, door shuts,
the whole lot. All the paintwork decontaminated and degreased, carefully
polished with a finishing wax applied. The bumpers, plastics and glass
also all prepared and protected.

Background To The R Evolution
Volvo decided there should be no direct successor to the T-5R, but due to its
success, they decided to develop a new high-performance model. The new car,
based on the T-5R, was called the 850 R and badged as such, which again came
in either saloon or sport wagon editions.
The only colours available were Bright Red, Black Stone, Dark Grey Pearl,
this Dark Olive Pearl, Turquoise Pearl and Polar White. Cream yellow was
discontinued for the 850 R.
The vehicle was based on the 850 Turbo, utilizing the new B5234T4
engine with a special Bosch ECU that added an additional 2 psi (0.1 bar)
of turbocharger boost pressure, giving the engine an extra 18 hp for
a total of 250 hp 350 nm of torque for the manual car which featured a
different Turbo, (explained below).
The engine was mated to a 4-speed automatic transmission or 5-speed manual
transmission, the latter of which was not available in the United States,
very few manual cars were made anywhere in the world. The engine tuning
was co-developed with Porsche, as was the transmission and other powertrain
components. Porsche also aided in designing some of the interior, such as
the Alcantara seat inserts. These cars came as standard with nearly every
feature available. Lower suspension and a limited slip-differential as
standard. The saloon featured a newly designed rear spoiler which was
now standard on the estate. The new Volan wheels are 7x 17-inch and
have 7 spokes. The sports seats are different (with Alcantara centre
and leather bolsters), Alcantara door cards, 2-tone leather steering
wheel, stainless steel 850 kick plates and R branded over mats. A 200w
amplifier was also added to the 8-speaker audio system as was the option
to have an S C-805/815 in-dash CD player.

B5234T4 Engine / Rare M59 Manual Car With TD04HL-16T Turbo
For a limited time in 1996 only, Volvo offered a new strengthened manual
transmission designed specifically for the 850 R (excluding U.S. market),
called the M59, which featured a viscous coupling limited slip
differential. Furthermore, the M59 equipped cars were fitted with the
B5234T4 2.3-litre 5-cylinder engine in saloon guise featuring a larger
TD04HL-16T turbo, re-designed turbo manifold & intercooler, unique ecu
with Motronic 4.4, uprated fuel pressure sensor and a heavy-duty clutch.
The estate models does not have these Turbos or upgrades. These
modifications enabled the manual transmission cars to produce 250 hp and
350 nm with 0-60 of 6.7 seconds in stock format, versus 240 hp and 330 nm
for the automatic transmission.
Other improvements were made at the suspension: thinner anti-roll bars,
and, that modification allowed to have stiffer damper settings. The MT
850R also has a viscous coupling and a Torsen differential (in case
of the M59 gearbox model).

Service History
Within the suede owner’s wallet is the service history record which
details a total of 14 services and 2 body inspections. The car was
used up until 2013 and at that stage not used until the turn of this
year when I bought it.

Condition
The bodywork really is in good condition for any car of this age. The paint
retains a good level of finish, with the merest of stone chips and a speckles
to the front bumper which are almost invisible. The deep Green Volvo paint
literally blazes in the sun and is beautiful after a high def shine, this
allows the Gold fleck in the pant to come through.

Alloys/Tyres
The Volan alloys have just received a professional refurbishment to a high
standard, as such they are as new. All tyres are excellent. The spare wheel
is a 5th Volan with good inflated tyre. 2 brand new Continental tyres fitted
to the rear, the fronts are Bridgestones and in excellent order.

Drive
Super-fast and the ultimate wolf in sheep's clothing, capable of superb
performance if and when required and excellent traction & grip though
equally with the ability to return an incredible 35 mpg on a careful run, tried and
tested. This is an awesome driver even for a 24-year-old car, however that was
how they were made, to last. Not a knock or a bang from any suspension components,
no disappointment, all electrics in excellent working order including computer
functions, drives and presents extremely well, begs to be driven.
