AH yes, the Rover P5. And what's more it's not the P5 saloon but the beautifully crafted coupe, a design icon from the pen of David Bache. I always thought that the P5 coupe was a piece of motoring genius in as much as it took a top end, luxury cruiser - always the choice of Prime Ministers and diplomats - and gave it such a simple tweak with a lowered rear roofline that it turned out to be such a delight to the eye. And here we have one. A 1965 Mark II 3-litre straight-six auto. Just beautiful. Check out their prices before you get a handle on where I am pricing mine. I know we are living in extremely difficult times and no-one needs reminding of the constraints we find ourselves under. However, rather than sit here twiddling my thumbs, I am slowly going to work through my existing stock and sell from home. Over a year, I would say that at least 90 per cent of my classic car sales are internet-based and so I am carrying on. I provide a transportation service for all my buyers and if I have to wait until we have the all-clear to resume transporting vehicles, then so be it. I am able to store cars here until such time as they can be released. I don't think that the current situation needs to call a halt to internet sales and hence here is my stunning P5 coupe offered for sale. And so, back to the car itself. She is in superb order and I would imagine that her mileage reading of 55,000 is probably right. Currently, she is on Irish plates as she was exported in 2017. Now I have brought her back into the UK and have completed all the necessary NOVA (notification of vehicle arrival) paperwork via my business's VAT portal. There was - and is - no tax to pay. You simply take the NOVA reference that I will give you when you purchase the car and have her returned to UK plates via the relevant DVLA form. It's as simple as that. She is currently parked up with her previous UK plates on her as I found them in the boot. Condition-wise, she is excellent. She is as solid as she is pretty and still has her original four jacking points. She drives superbly with her Borg-Warner auto box and, interior-wise, she is just delightful. Beautiful navy leather and woodwork are both in top condition. She features the extra "Coupe" dials beneath the dash and notice the "separate" rear seats which were fitted to the Mark II models. On a quirky matter, you will notice something else peculiar to the Mark II coupe as well. On the steel panels behind the rear windows and at the bottom of the screen pillars, there are the famous Rover Viking badges. They were fitted at the last minute and passed through the design channels before it was too late to halt production. Initially, Rover had planned to fit small parking lights to these pillars but then decided against it. So, at the last minute, a draughtsman was asked to design the silver panels so that each side featured the world famous Viking logo. This he did. However, due to being left-handed, the flags on the logo face left when they should face right. They are the only examples of this in the history of Rover cars. Strange I know. But I couldn't help sharing it! Anyway, here we have a top example of a top model. Lift the new carpets and you will reveal the original floors in body colour. Pull out the tool tray from beneath the dashboard on the passenger's side and you will find a fully stocked Rover tool tray, right down to the two touch up pens. One in Light Navy Blue and the other in Steel Grey for the roof! There are some slight paint imperfections here and there but do not mistake for rot or rust. Also, if anything strikes you as odd on the photos, it will be shadows! All my classic cars are treated as the equivalent of motoring antiques. This one, for example, is 55-years-old. They cannot be compared to the wife's six-month-old Chelsea tractor and they are bound to come with imperfections, quirks and bits and pieces that will need attention even if it is some time in the future. They do however come with oodles of charm, appeal and are there to be loved like a family pet. If you are new to the classic car scene, then please bear all this in mind. Demand is outstripping supply these days and they don't make the old girls any more. So, make some allowances and drive away with a smile on your face! Thanks for reading, Martin. (07595-020282).
