1968 Jaguar S-Type, Low Mileage, Full History For Sale

Examples like this are so difficult to find, this is one of the very rare opportunities to purchase a low mileage 1960’s Jaguar Saloon with full history from new, still in factory colours, retaining a huge amount of originality and is matching numbers throughout. VWX 931F was manufactured on the 4th July 1968, making this a very late S’Type. The car left the factory in British Racing Green with Red Amba upholstery equipped with manual transmission with overdrive. The car was distributed from Auto Centre, Leeds and sold new by Harry Thornes Ltd of Dewsbury.

The original bill of sale from Harry Thornes Ltd confirms the car was sold new to B. D. C (Morley) Ltd, Towend Iron Works, Morley, Leeds, registered as VWX 931F for a list price of £1, 826. 15. Accompanying the original bill of sale is the cars Periodic Maintenance Voucher booklet, confirming the cars first service by the supplying dealer on the 23rd August 1968 at 1108 miles. Harry Thornes Ltd carried out further services at 2461, 5226 and 7976 miles in September 1970. In 1971, Leeds Jaguar dealership Appleyard Ripon Ltd took over maintenance, servicing the Jaguar at 9731 miles in 1972. Appleyard Ripon Ltd switched to a Passport to Service booklet and stamps confirm services at 15922 in late 1972 and 22154 miles in 1973.

Not only do we have the original service books, but also eight A4 pages of handwritten notes from January 1972 to 1990 detailing servicing, maintenance and fuel costs. The original Appleyard Ripon Ltd service invoices are also with the car throughout this period detailing services in 1974, 1975, 1976, 1977, 1978, a new exhaust system at Quickfit in 1979, and more Appleyard Ripon Ltd service and maintenance in 1980, 1981, 1983, 1984, 1986 and 1989 when the mileage was 37398. Later in 1989 and in 1990 Drighlington Car and Commercial Centre carried out maintenance to the Jaguar before the car was sold after 23 years with just one owner. The car had been truly cherished over its first 23 years, and the paperwork confirms that the car was even judged and given 1st prize in an S'Type concours competition at Nostell Priory on Yorkshire Day, Sunday 3rd June 1977 when it was just nine years old. From 1991 to 1998 the S Type was with an owner in Bradford and he kept up to the impeccable maintenance of the car. We have invoices throughout the 1990's from Huddersfield Jaguar main agents Perrys Jaguar and in 1998 with 44000 genuine miles from new, the car was sold to its next owner.

VWX 931F had two West Yorkshire based owners between 1998 and 2001 and during this period was maintained by a Huddersfield based classic maintenance specialists with all receipts on file to both owners. In 2001, the S Type was sold to a classic car enthusiast in York who was later to become one of our customers. In four years of ownership, he really used the car, covering 11500 miles with all maintenance carried out by a York classic specialist. In 2005, the car arrived with us for the first time with a warranted mileage of 59500 from new. We quickly sold the Jaguar to a regular customer in nearby Pickering who enjoyed attending shows and events and during his ownership, in December 2006, the car featured in the Jaguar Drivers Magazine as ‘Car of the Month'. After three years in Pickering, the Jaguar returned to us for the second time, coming in part exchange against an MGA Roadster. On the 15th August 2008 with 60489 miles we sold the car to another regular customer who in eleven years has taken the car onto the next level, spending a considerable sum on the car whilst enjoying weekends rallies, shows, tours and covering almost 7000 miles.

VWX 931F left us in 2008 as a beautiful, exceptional and largely original car and it returns eleven years on even better. Whilst the car drove superbly, the owner wanted a car more comfortable for long distance touring and had uprated front coil springs fitted, a brand new hydro electric rack and pinion power steering system installed plus an uprated alternator, kenlowe fan with manual override, a dash mounted cold start control switch, a 12V power outlet socket in the boot compartment and a discreet modern sound system with ipod connection in the glove box. The Jaguar has been regularly serviced over the eleven years with all receipts on file, and maintenance work has included a new clutch and slave cylinder and tyres. Cosmetic work has included a new old stock rear bumper, re-polished dash top, new furflexes, carpets, colour coded seat belts and hours of engine bay detailing.

There is no doubt VWX 931F is a very special car and its incredible on the road. The last 7000 miles has seen lots of classic runs and rallies, trips to places such as the Isle of Man and the car has always performed superbly. On the road steering is absolutely perfect with the assistance of the power upgrade, handling and braking is first class and the engine is exceptional holding impressive oil pressure. This is one of, if not the very best S'Type we have ever driven and it just cruises gracefully with smooth gear changes, a perfectly smooth overdrive, correct cooling and is ready for any long or short distance journey.

Somehow this car has the fine balance of not being concours, but just right for regular cruising and picking up awards at classic car shows and events. The bodywork is sensational, door gaps and fit are superb, the paint finish and chrome are of a high standard and the interior is unrepeatable. The seats are remarkably original and outstanding, door cards are excellent, carpets like new, woodwork is largely original and nice, the headlining excellent. The car is absolutely right and its provenance and history make this car even more interesting and special. As expected with this type of car, the tool kit is present and adding to the paperwork mentioned above, it has a huge amount of tax discs, MOT certificates and even the original Jaguar Owner's Service Policy car and booklet with it. This is a true collector's piece, a genuine low mileage car with full history that can also be driven and enjoyed with confidence.
