|Jaguar C-Type Replica|
The Jaguar C-Type was a racing sports car built from 1951-1953 where the “C” stands for “competition” and boy did Jaguar live up to that! The C-Type was a super successful winning race car, most notably at the Le Mans 24 hours race, which it won twice.
The car used the XK 120 running gear of the contemporary road proven XK120 in a lightweight tubular frame designed by Jaguar Chief Engineer William Heynes. The aerodynamic aluminium body was jointly developed by William Heynes, Bob Knight and later Malcolm Sayer.
A total of 53 C-Types were built where most got sold to private collectors mainly in the USA.
The road-going XK120’s 3.4-litre twin-cam, straight 6 engine produces about 134kw, the C-Type version was tuned around 153kw. The early C-Types were fitted with SU Carburettors and drum brakes. Later models were more powerful, using triple twin-choke Weber carbs and high lift Camshafts. They were also lighter then in the 1953 as they were fitted with performance braking on all four wheels. The C-Types were built with the idea that they weren’t going to be road-going cars, they were race cars, hence, they were built without carpets, weather equipment and exterior door handles.
In 1951 the car won its first attempt, the factory entered 3 cars and of which only one finished. That year there were also a privately owned C-Type that completed the race and placed 11th. 1952 Jaguar had some competition with Mercedes-Benz 300 SLS’s that were quite fast and Jaguar modified their aerodynamics to increase the top speed. However, the rearrangement of the cooling system made the cars vulnerable to overheating and all 3 cars had to retire from the race. Sir Sterling Moss and Peter Walker’s car had overheated and hurriedly fitted a full-sized radiator, but still lost oil pressure after mechanical breakage.
In 1953, C-Types won the Le Mans 24-Hour race again, and also placed 2nd and 4th. This time the body was thinner, lighter and the original carbs were replaced with DCO3 40mm Wbers whited helped produce 164kw. That year Jaguar also fitted disc brakes which helped. In 1954 it was Jaguars final year at the Le Mans and placed 4th.
Sadly one of the Legendary Racing drivers, Sir Sterling Moss passed away - this is a true iconic car that replicates the version he raced.
The car on offer was hand built in South Africa by a renowned collector and fabricator. The attention to detail is where this replica shines true. It’s a fantastic example right from first gaze…the lovely proportions are spot on with exemplary coachwork. From the leather bonnet straps, to the original dials, no expense was spared in making this a proper replica. She drives well too, with its powerful motor in such a light body, this girl has some proper get up and go! We absolutely love the colour which shows off every curve!
