Standard Park Lane Saloon – Utterly Charming
By the early 1920s Standard were offering saloon bodies - previously all cars had been tourers - based on mass-production principles using a wooden track along which cars were pushed by hand. The Standard Motor Company was justifiably proud of the modern factory at Canley, boasting in its advertisements "It is a beautifully lighted and well-aired factory standing on the edge of a breezy common away from the city din and smoke”,
Soon the company had a share of the market comparable to the Austin Motor Company manufacturing over 10,000 cars in 1924. As the immediate post WW1 boom faded, many rival marques were discontinued. Cars became steadily larger and more elaborate as manufacturers sought to maintain sales. During the 1920s Standard named all the models after towns, not only near the factory such as Canley and Kenilworth but also further afield – Teignmouth, Falmouth and Exmouth.
Milestone Classics are genuinely delighted to offer our 1926 Standard Park Lane Saloon. In outstanding condition, the Standard benefitted from a major restoration in the late nighties (just about everything was replaced or rebuilt at considerable expense) with very light use since. The classic Edwardian combination of dark blue body/black running boards & wings, nickel bright work and artillery wheels is absolutely stunning. The interior is in amazing condition with re-upholstery seats/headlining, new carpets and refurbished dashboard & instruments, all to a very high specification
As you would expect, there is a huge amount of paperwork with the car including buff log-book (the car is still wearing her original registration), pictures before/during/after restoration including letters from owner, handbooks, MOT’s etc. The first owner & his family kept the car for over 60 years and she is also featured on the cover of ‘Cars & The Standard Motor Company’ book by Phil Homer.
Cars of this quality with excellent provenance rarely come to market. The Standard would grace any collection and will make an excellent candidate for film, TV, promotional work – a hugely interesting hobby that would generate income and lots of interesting experiences……
We strongly recommend a viewing and test drive (note middle pedal = accelerator) in order to fully appreciate this remarkable car. The expression “you don’t own these cars, we are simply custodians who use, enjoy and then pass onto the next lucky keeper” could have been written with the Standard in mind.
