The third and final iteration of the Jaguar E-Type was the Series 3. The straight-six engine that had been the stalwart of all Jaguar sports cars since the XK120 in 1948 was replaced with an all new V12 engine. Jaguar started plans for a V12 engine as early as 1951, with a view to using it for Le Mans. The famous XJ13 prototype, that was meant to replace the D-Type, received the first Jaguar V12 engine but sadly it never made it to the racetrack. After the stillborn XJ13 project, the focus of the engine design switched to road cars and the Series 3 was the first E-Type V12 Jaguar production car in 1971.

Offered as either an Open 2-Seater or 2+2, the new Series 3 E-Type V12 had a longer wheelbase and more cabin room and luggage space. The aesthetics of the car were a departure from the Series 1 & 2 cars with a slated grille, flared wheel arches (to accommodate wider tyres) and a quad exhaust system. Aimed squarely at the export market, of the 15,287 Series 3 E-Type’s made between 1971-75, just 3,986 were right-hand drive and of those, only 1,871 were Open 2-Seater examples like the car now offered for sale at The Classic Motor Hub.

The Jaguar E-Type V12 Series 3 Roadster (OTS) now in stock at the Classic Motor Hub is a rare home market example that was delivered new through Henlys of London in June 1973. Specified from new in Signal Red with Black interior with a manual transmission, this fabulous example is still in it’s original specification to this day and comes with the added benefit of an original Jaguar hardtop in Black.

The early ownership history of this E-Type isn’t known but the current V5C states there have been 4 previous keepers from new. An original MOT certificate from 1981 shows the car was residing, or at least tested in, Taunton, Somerset. The recorded mileage at that point was 28,914 miles, an average of just over 3,500 miles per year. This was clearly a ‘high days and holidays’ car for its early owners. Another original MOT certificate, this time from 1983, shows the car being tested in Tunbridge Wells and showing just 29,997 miles. It would remain in East Sussex until 2011, when it was purchased by the current owner.

In 1999, DUO 301L was purchased by a Mr. R Baldock of Uckfield, East Sussex. The new owner was clearly a stickler for paperwork and maintenance as we have every invoice and shred of paperwork on file from his ownership detailing a host of work carried out over the years, that add up to nearly £40,000 GBP.

According to early invoices on file the car had been unused for some time and the new owner wasted no time in recommissioning it. Major works included a full rebuild of the cylinder heads which were converted to unleaded specification at the same time. The carburettors were rebuilt and set up. The brakes were all gone through including new discs, pads, master cylinder and brake servo. The suspension was overhauled including new dampers to the front and rear. An exhaust system including new downpipes was fitted. The cooling system was recommissioned with new coolant hoses and fresh coolant. After a couple of years of use, the owner made the decision to go a little further mechanically and in 2001, at approximately 33,000 miles, the following was carried out. The engine and gearbox were stripped out of the car, the cylinders honed, new piston rings fitted, all new main and big end bearings, the flywheel was refaced and a new clutch plates and release bearings fitted. All new engine mounts, timing chains, oil pump and water pumps were fitted at this time as well.

In 2005, signs of corrosion prompted the fastidious Mr. Baldock to take DUO 301L to have the bonnet and front sections restored and in 2006, he took the car to XJ Restorations to have the entire rear tub gone through, including new wheel arches supplied by Martin Robey.

In 2011 this E-Type V12 was bought by the current owner from Racing Green Cars, showing just 39,475 miles, joining his stable which included a Ferrari F40, Mercedes 190SL and a brace of Porsche 911 2.7 RS’s, because one is never enough! The current owner has enjoyed and maintained the car, including a summer spent driving around the South of France, where it didn’t miss a beat.

Still presenting in its original specification, beautifully maintained over the years by just 5 owners and today showing just 40,000 miles from new, DUO 301L really is a wonderful opportunity for any Jaguar or classic car collector. Accompanied by an original hardtop, tools, handbooks and a comprehensive history file with invoices going back 20 years and MOT certificates going back to 1981, this stunning Jaguar E-Type V12 Series 3 Roadster is now available for sale at The Classic Motor Hub.
