1973 Vw t2 bay campervan 1,700cc twin carb. Devon For Sale
Purchased august 2019 with just over 83,000 miles recorded. since then work carried out:- mot till 14th november 2020. new headlight units with halogen bulbs fitted. oil, spin-on filter and gauze filter changed. new plugs, points, condenser, plug leads and distributor cap. new air filter. brake fluid changed. Front discs and rear drum brakes inspected and adjusted. (front calipers and pads replaced may 2015 at 81,779 miles) “quick shifter plate” and gear lever extension. replacement s/h steering box fitted by “air cooled workshop” in ninfield (new unavailable at that time) this specialist firm carried out a bodywork restoration which was completed in november 2012 at a cost of £4,213. major items involved replacing the floor, jacking points and crossmembers together the two front arches, bottom of sliding door, off side sill and rear valance. The paintwork was changed to white over red. the history file also reveals that the clutch was replaced june 2010 at 80,205 miles and more importantly before that heavy duty roll bars and kyb gas shock absorbers were fitted front and rear. both axles were adapted with proprietary lowering kits, body dropped slightly and the desirable empi 15inch five spoke alloy wheels fitted with low profile tyres. this camper therefore does not have the roll and instability which came as standard from the factory! as a bonus, the vehicle height is now low enough to pass easily under a standard up and over garage door. wiring is in place for a split charge to a leisure battery which would be sited in n/s of engine compartment. the pop up roof is the devon type concertina giving even headroom along and across. the van’s interior is basic and very much a blank canvas. No gaudy colour schemes which would appeal solely to the individual owner! It’s there for you to put your individual mark on. there is no fridge, cooker or sink. A stainless steel combined gas hob and sink unit is available from specialist caravan accessory suppliers for just over £200 and designed for DIY fitting. body sides are bare ply panelled with thermal insulation behind and the floor covered with sanded pine slats giving a rustic artisan effect. complementing this is a two door cupboard and a small storage rack made from the same material. A pine table with a fold down leg attaches to the cupboard when required giving a central flat surface area. in 2012 a new full size rock and roll bed/seat was fitted following the restoration and is in as new condition having been used just a few times. the original driver and passenger seats have been replaced with leather saab ones which have built in headrests for added safety. Each has inertia reel belts and there are also two reel belts on the rock and roll rear seat/bed. with the van but not fitted are:- an external metal mesh wrap round sun visor which bolts on. a full width over cab roof rack with wood slats. tow bar. thermal curtains for summer and winter use. “just kampers” breathable full cover. louvre window to replace fixed pane and quarter light in sliding door. this vw drives and handles well with no known faults in engine, transmission, brakes and suspension and the 1700cc twin carb engine gives adequate torque for relaxed cruising. although mot exempt, for peace of mind it was tested on 12th november 2019 with an advisory of “some surface rust on both front floor pans”. This has since been attended to. i am selling because i bought on a whim one sunny day trying to recapture my youth. I have realised now that i must act my age and let this lovely campervan pass to someone younger who can enjoy her to the full.
