1972 L Rolls-Royce Silver Shadow 1 4 Door Saloon converted at huge expense into the much rarer Bentley T Series T1 and mechanically uprated for long distance road tours and rallies. 6.75 Litre V8, 3 Speed Automatic, Road Tax and M.O.T. Test Exempt. The professional conversion was carried out by Rolls-Royce and Bentley Specialist West Hoathly Garage between 1999 and 2002 costing at least £24,570.39 including full conversion to a Bentley T. Bentley Turbo Front Struts, Colonial Front Springs, Stiffer Front Dampers, 2x Exhaust Boxes removed, additional 10 Gallon Petrol Tank in Boot, additional Instrumentation, new inner and outer Sills and a full Respray in Original Shell Grey turned it into basically a new car fit for long distance travel. These upgrades lead to it being used extensively around the world including the London to Istanbul Rally in 2000 waved off by the late Sir Stirling Moss. A number of upgrades and repairs have been made since the conversion including an Engine Rebuild at specialist Hoffmans of Henley, the most recent receipt is for £1,419.41 + Labour spent at R-R&B Specialist D.E.W. Services at 54,332 miles mainly on Engine Service work, uprated Fuel Pumps and a Gearbox out Service. This T however looks standard from the outside apart from the Bentley mud flaps and the interior only displays 2 extra gauges (Coolant Temperature being a handy addition as well as the standard push button warning buzzer) and a modern Sony radio along with a lovely Moto Lita Wood and Chrome Steering Wheel. An extra switch has been added for an electric fan maybe needed to assist the viscous fan in hot climates. If one wanted to uprate a Shadow or T series today for long distance use it would cost considerably more than 20 years ago, this is perfect for Hero Classic Road Rallies or even the Peking to Paris event, this has the be the ultimate SY series R-R&B Motor Car to buy and actually drive that still looks standard and has had much expenditure since 1999. The non age related NRP725 number plate is also included which is worth up to £3,000, it replaced EUF747L in 1999. One could also just use this as a regular T that drives better than standard, it certainly seems to accelerate faster and handle better but still keeps the unique smooth ride that no modern car can compete with today.

Mileage displays 56,075, around 44k since the conversion where a Bentley Speedometer that read 12,124 miles was fitted from the owners old written off T Series, CBY 60G, which he rolled on a mountain pass on the London to Cape Town Hero rally in 1997. Last M.O.T. tested on 18th September 2017 at 52,778 miles. Road Taxed so okay to test drive (Historic so Exempt), we have a number of old M.O.T. certificates and tax discs.

Chassis Number SRH13750, we have copies of the original build sheets including the purchase invoice for £9,363.58 from P.J. Evans (H.R. Attwood Ltd.) of Wolverhampton to the purchaser, Mr Edwards of Shropshire, registered on 24th August 1972. We also have a full ownership record and full mileage and fuel records (Super Unleaded) from 2010 to 2016 when it was mainly run on Shell V Power so again no expense spared.

This T series SY Shadow 1 has the original pre flared wheel arch exterior with the lovely non vented 15 inch hub caps, separate reversing lights and of course the desirable chrome bumpers. The interior has the later safety dashboard but with the pre television style warning gauges. These Shadows use the later much more reliable General Motors 3 speed automatic torque converter gearbox which was used by Rolls-Royce up to 1992. It also has the elegant side marker lights which look super at night.

This Bentley T is too far down the conversion road to turn it back to an original Shadow but they only made 1,703 T1’s compared to 16,717 Shadow 1’s so they are very rare as are the Bentley badged parts and bonnet. Every single R-R badge has been replaced with B badges, one won’t find a single R-R badge on the car apart from in the engine bay where one will be surprised to find even the engine rocker covers have been change to BENTLEY (some original T series cars don’t have this), the under bonnet chassis and engine numbers and the name badges are the only tell tails of it being a Rolls. The additional 10 Gallon Petrol Tank fits neatly into the recess at the front of the large boot with an internal filler that gradually fills the main tank when being used, one can just use the large main standard tank and save the additional tank for when petrol is cheap or when it is needed for touring. The headlights are the later late 80’s / early 90’s Bentley Continental / R-R Corniche units that stand out proud and are much more flat fronted but provide much higher output. The wooden Moto Lita Steering wheel is in lovely condition and is a pleasure to use giving more steering feedback than standard and more legroom, this would be an easy item to sell and revert back to original if one wishes. The Bentley Grille (An extra metal mesh sheet has been added behind the vanes), Vanes and Mascot for example are very valuable, worth around £4,000 this could easily be regularly changed with a Rolls-Royce Grille and Spirit of Ecstasy Mascot.

We have the hardback owners handbook and the jack and wheel brace are in the bag in the boot. We have a huge history file with many invoices and rally records and photographs, this is a unique motor car.

These SY cars are very useable and are comparatively cheap to maintain with no ecu’s especially due to no road tax or M.O.T. tests being needed as well as very cheap Insurance, they are also increasing in value at the moment following the Cloud / S Series value trend upwards. They are an extremely versatile and a comfortable way to travel long distances, a good 2 part video on YouTube is Harry Metcalfe of Harrys Garage driving his early Shadow to the Arctic Circle on winter tyres.

The coachwork is superb for the age of the motor car as it was painted 20 years ago not 50 so it really stands out, there are a few minor marks, flaws, scratches and minor corrosion areas but nothing major. The large amount of chrome trim is in very good condition with just a few minor flaws. The boot closes easily with precision that is unique to the SY Shadow models and all the doors close with a satisfying thud, the bonnet is like closing a bank vault. The V8 engine starts instantly from hot or cold from a hidden button after turning the key and sounds lovely, quiet at tickover but the exhaust is quite vocal when pushed, it was known as the nosiest Bentley Saloon in Rallying. The car performs superbly, perkier than standard due to the uprated fuel pumps and more free flowing exhaust system, the gear changes are very smooth due to the recent gearbox out service. It runs very cool with a unique ride, firm at the front with very little roll but standard soft silky shadow at the rear, it takes to gently flowing down the road or to being pushed through corners, a unique experience. The leather shows very few signs of wear as the front seats were removed for rallying thus saved from wear and heat, the light woodwork is lovely and in near perfect condition as it was restored and the door trims have straight grain crossbanding inlay, the carpets have been replaced and are in very good condition. This T1 even runs on the correct upgraded wider 235 Avon Turbosteel Tyres. One will struggle to buy a SY RR&B motor car that has had this high level of expenditure and usage, most just cover a few hundred miles a year with just basic maintenance, if this was an original T it would be considerably more expensive.
