MG MIDGET 1500 CC
First Register: 13.01.1976
Original Engine No: 13898
Re-conditioned Engine No: YC16426HE
Colour: Montego Blu
The car was built towards the demise of MG and cars in this series were mainly made for the American market whose safety regulations required impact bumpers, roll bars, front disc brakes and a larger engine.
Little is known of MLK 487P’s life until 2000 when the then owner decided the time was right for a complete, total restoration.
The car was dismantled and a complete new body was purchased from BMC Heritage (No: BMH 901199 – certificate issued).
The chassis was stripped and prepared for painting.
The body and chassis were painted in primer, undercoat and top colour coat (Montego Blue). All the underside of the body and chassis were also treated with waxoly, including spraying inside all the cavities.
For some reason, which I have not discovered, the engine was changed for a reconditioned 1500 cc engine and the car was reassembled using existing and new parts, as required.
Re-upholstery to the interior included new carpet, door cards, seats and a new dashboard. Also replaced were the wheels, and hood.
By the time all the parts were fitted and the car was re-commissioned it was 2005.
I have manged to recover some information on the cars history since 2005, mainly MOT certificates, some bills for works done and British Heritage verification certificate.
This is a great little sports car for anyone not interested in a big project but happy to do some tinkering and minor maintenance work. I have enjoyed taking the car to various fetes and shows over the past 5 year's.
The car has only been used in dry condition and is always garaged. Although this year because of the virus I have been shielded for the last 10 week so the car is still in de-commission state as a carry on from the winter. this car is in great condition for 40 years and people always comment on t he paint work and the engine.
The car is now registered as Historic and therefore is not subject to Road Tax or MOT, making it cheap to run and with a huge network of clubs’ support and parts suppliers.
