Lotus Esprit S1 - last UK car.
Monaco white, black leather. 72000 miles. (10,000 since full restoration).

History.
There’s a full file of history supplied with the car, including the factory order form, build sheets, and early warranty claims records; chassis 381G was an internal factory stock order, specified in silver, with black cloth and Marcasite. The order was allocated to Cathedral Garages in April of 1978; however the vehicle was passed to sales in May of 1978 and sold to the Norfolk Motor Company, the Lotus Dealers in Norwich. Early warranty documentation shows the car registered as BNG290T and it was collected on the 1st August 1978 by a Mr E. Boddy from Ipswich. The car had a total of 9 keepers between 1978 and 2009 when I bought it. I sold the car as a project to a gentleman in Manchester, who utilised the services of Esprit Cars (ex. Sports Motors) in Stockport to completely restore the car. I bought it back in 2011, completed some outstanding areas and sold the car to its current owner, who at the time was a Lead Designer at Lotus Cars. During the last owner’s nine years and 10,000-mile ownership, the car has been maintained almost exclusively by renowned Lotus specialist, Gerald Turner at GST in Newmarket. It’s been used by Lotus Cars for official engagements, was photographed with one of the Esprit “father figures”, Roger Becker at Blickling Hall, features with Roger in Top Gear’s “50 Years of Bond Cars” and has been “immortalised” as a 1:43 scale model by Corgi in their Vanguards series, with it’s registration number BNG290T.

Chassis, body, glass.
The chassis is the original unit, and once blasted it was found to be in good order, and was repainted black. The car seen very little wet use and has been garaged since completion, consequently it still presents well underneath today. The rolling chassis was completed with new components, and the engine and transmission castings were vapour blasted before being rebuilt, completely in the engine’s case.
This models signature Wolfrace wheels are in excellent order, correctly painted on the inside in a silver, with a lathed finish to the outer faces. Tyres are all very good, with Falkens in the correct sizes being fitted front and rear.
A replica single mirror and mount replaced the two original electric type door mirrors.
The body was sent to Surface & Design in Blackpool who, performed the colour change from silver to white. The body and paintwork are fantastic with an exceptionally nice finish. There’s a small touch in on the driver’s door in correct paint, and the wheel wells have just been re-edged and repainted. The side repeaters in the front are of an unknown addition – they are of the same type evidenced on S3 Esprit, and I’ve seen some early S2 (and World Championship S2’s) with the units in this location.
New alloy petrol tanks were fitted inside the body sections before body was refitted.
The rear screen is original, side glass is all very presentable showing only faint scratches over time, and the front screen was a new unit, fitted during restoration.

Engine and gearbox.
The car’s done some 10,000 miles since being rebuilt, and the engine performs well indeed, being properly bedded in and now keen to spin and work. The fans cycle properly, and the car appears tolerant in high temperatures. Fuel lines all replaced. Having last been serviced 3174 miles ago, other items were addressed on this visit, notably a new spigot bearing which required gearbox removal; new driveshaft U/J’s were fitted radius arm mounts, front upper ball joints, and lower link bushes were all replaced – the car then set up properly for geometry, the car’s stance is absolutely bang on. The carbs received new floats and was tuned. The gearbox operates well and does not display any weak synchro issues. It’s now due a full fluid and belt service, including cam belt – these will be performed on sale

Interior.
The interior was re trimmed shortly before I bought the car in 2009; I was told that the trimming was done to factory pattern by a local trimmer in a premium black hide to dash and runway sections, console and arm rest, cant rails, instrument binnacle and seats. It smells premium! It also looks great as was done sensitively, stitching patterns and contours respect those of original car, and is complete with the steel capping trim. Carpets were replaced in 2011 and still look great now. The Veglia green dials are all there, complete with a panel lamp rheostat, which was a feature for S2 Esprit. The steering wheel features a replacement blade, dished to provide extra knee clearance for taller drivers – the original spoke blade is supplied, and the process can be reversed.
The boot boards were remade, with new brackets, new carpets, and a new luggage cover. were also The car wears an S2 engine cover; there’s a benefit in as much as it’s much easier for fluid checks, and I believe that this was factory fitted as the build book suggests that there was an engine cover shortage (I suspect they ran out S1 solid shells, and as S2 was being stock built from June 78, it earned itself one of these!) There are plenty of S2 hallmarks on the car (electric door mirror switch, rheostat, blank off for induction pipes, vents in rear inner buttress, engine cover.)

Summary.
A first-rate, matching numbers example, restored between 2010/11, the last assigned Esprit S1 variant for the UK market – with some lovely additional provenance having been earnt during the current owner’s time with the car.
Looks and drives superbly; requires some detail jobs, and a cambelt “C” service, which will be completed for the next owner upon sale.
The condition of this example and the rarity and ever-increasing desirability of this model should ensure future enjoyment and be a relatively safe investment for years to come.
