Bought new in 1963 by famous composer Frank Cordell as a present for his new wife, just for them on sunny days and holidays. Frank died prematurely leaving the car to his young son, so his widow entrusted it to a local car museum. The son recommissioned her for the road circa 1999, but soon after sold it to me as he had three young children and it was impractical to keep. The mileage then was about 39, 000. The car was completely rust free, straight and unmolested. It had been garaged all of its previous life and throughout my ownership it has been kept in an underfloor heated garage.
I wanted a fast but reliable road car so embarked on a lot of recognised improvements/ upgrades., for classic tours and road rallies.
All the work has been done by Orchard Restorations who are highly regarded Healey Specialists.
In 2009/ 10 engine and gearbox removed.
Bored, new pistons and new steel 'longer throw' crankshaft fitted, increasing capacity from 2. 9 to 3. 5 litres[this mod is unique to Orchard Restorations]. New fast road cam and followers, new timing gears, chain and damper, flywheel lightened and fitted with up-rated clutch, entire bottom end professionally balanced. New Dennis Welch aluminium gas flowed cylinder head, new 6 branch exhaust manifold to side exit silencer, rebuilt distributor and 2 inch carbs. Net result 204BHP and 225FTLB torque (200FTLB at 2, 000rpm. I have a detailed printout from the rolling road setup.
Fully rebuilt by Hardy Engineering fitting close ratio straight cut Sebring Gear Cluster with rebuilt up-rated competition overdrive unit.
New 3. 54 diff from Hardy Engineering fitted (original 3. 9 with car).
Recored high capacity radiator with modern plastic fan (very efficient and reliable, it has never overheated even in the South of France).
Completely rebuilt with 2 extra leaves fitted to rear springs, overhauled shock absorbers x 4 and larger diameter front anti-roll bar fitted.
Completely rebuilt with professionally reconditioned original servo and stainless steel sleeved master cylinder.
Fully rebuilt including steering box.
5. 5J stainless wires fitted with 185/ 65 tyres (new set 2018).
Body rust free, unrestored and very clean. Resprayed in original Ice Blue Metallic in 2009. Interior a bit tatty but buckets of patina and very usable.
Other upgrades/ small jobs done, Filter King [glass bowl], Facet Fuel Pump, Electronic Ignition, New Heater Matrix, Alternator[neg earth] Seats re foamed with new leather stitched under old leather coverings to retain Patina, Halogen Headlamps
Brakes overhauled and renewed as necessary 2020.
Total cost of the work carried out above was circa £34, 000.
She is an absolute delight to drive, fast, fun, tractable and, above all, furious. Sounds fantastic with the single side exit exhaust. This is not a Sunday morning poser's machine it is a very mean and purposeful car, that is extremely fast and aural, but quite docile and easy to drive, even in traffic.
Would make a perfect long distance/ endurance rally car. It is very tractable (pulls cleanly and strongly from below 1000rpm in overdrive 4th). Very usable and comfortable, and most importantly, has proved to be completely reliable as I have done about 16, 000 miles in her since the work was done, and approximately 21, 000 in total since I purchased her, mostly long distance tours both here and abroad.
Detailed and comprehensive history folder, including fuel ration book of 1973!!
Thank you taking the time to read my sermon, there are lots of little improvements/ things i have done to her as well over the years, so any questions just call me.
Reason for sale, just time for a change.
