This car is a rare survivor of one of the French Grand Routieres; Delahaye, Delage, Talbot and Salmson. Salmson were originally pump manufacturers and became the leading French manufacturer of Aero engines during the First World War.

Because of the peculiarities of the French taxation system, Salmson specialised (with their aero engine technology) in small, high-powered engines, winning virtually all races and competitions that they entered in their class in the inter-war years, and setting many records.

After the Second World War, production restarted with modification of their pre-war models. The S4-E incorporated the technically advanced features of the S4-DA, such as the engine with twin overhead camshaft, hemispherical piston heads with centrally-positioned spark plugs, strengthened crankshaft and advanced castings. The chassis featured rack-and-pinion steering, independent front suspension which was now refined with the addition of longitudinal torsion bars, and cantilever rear springs. This particular car has a Angle of Paris berline body with no B-pillar.

Commentators at the time noted that the new engine and suspension enhancements gave rise to a combination that was best in its class. Driving the car today has a lovely vibe about it, really nice to drive and quite sporting with a responsive engine and sharp steering and good suspension. The electro-magnetic gearbox - "similar to a modern tiptronic box" - is really fun to use.#

The car has been stored in a museum in the south of France for the last 30 years and as a consequence is virtually rust-free. The twin cam engine with its Cotal gearbox has been mechanically recommissioned after its 30-year rest and the four-wheel hydraulic brake system has been totally overhauled, stainless steel exhausts fitted and a new battery installed.

The overall condition of the car is good, the underside and chassis extremely good. Electrics are all working including the stalk controls and Mickey Mouse ear indicators, with lovely Marchal headlamps and Cibe Fog and Spot Lamps. Paintwork is presentable, but old, with various chips, scrapes and imperfections, but still looking elegant and surprisingly smart. The brightwork and wheels are in excellent condition and with the brightwork showing a nice patina. Upholstery is in good condition, carpets are remade items that are satisfactory. The headlining, which I believe to have been replaced at some point in the past is in perfect condition.

Glasswork and windows work as they should, including the opening windscreen. To sum up, this is an opportunity to obtain an EXTREMELY rare car in basically unmolested condition that can be used or improved as required at a fraction of the cost of the Trailer Show Cars that may be available.

The car is now ready for viewing, so if you would like to arrange an appointment to view or book a test drive please get in touch at Craner Classic Cars, The Gate House, Nottingham.
