1935 1933 MG ‘L’ Type Magna For Sale

1933 MG ‘L’ Type Magna

Following on from the well-received ‘F-Type’ Magna which had appeared in 1931, the ‘L’ Type appeared in the Spring of 1933. The new, improved Magna used the shorter stroke engine from the ‘K Type’ Magnette. The bore and stroke of 57mm x 71mm gave a capacity of 1086cc putting the new model into the 1100cc class. An important innovation on this engine was the new cross flow cylinder head which boosted power to 41bhp at 5500rpm. The ‘L1’ was a four-seater and there was an option of a ‘close-coupled Coupe’, known as the Continental. The two-seater version was designated L2. However, only around 90 of the latter models were produced as demand was minimal.

This MG ‘L’ Magna, (chassis number 0580), was originally fitted with the Continental Coupe body style, however, two years later in 1935 it was converted to ‘L2’ configuration.

Strikingly finished in Old English White with red leather interior trim. The seats are particularly comfortable with good adjustment allowing for taller drivers.

This Magna was restored in the 1980s by respected ‘MMM’ specialists Baynton-Jones for a Swedish Client to join his collection of classic cars. The body, including a set of aluminium swept wings, were built by Rod Jolley using the pattern from Bob Jones’ original L2.

Acquired by the current owner in 2006 this car has been carefully maintained and won a number of awards. The following year, significant work was undertaken which included replacement of the differential casing and an engine overhaul and upgrade during 2008/ 9 by ‘MMM’ Guru Barry Foster. The new engine specification featured an increase in capacity to 1. 4 litres and full details of this upgrade are on file.

The car sits on Blockley Tyres and looks very purposeful with aerosceens and headlamp stone guards. The hood, sidescreens and tonneau cover are in first class condition.

In 2011 the car was runner up in the Pre-war class ‘Pride of Ownership’ at MG Live. The comprehensive history file includes photographs of the Baynton-Jones restoration, Barry Fosters engine rebuild and photos of the car whilst in Sweden. There is also correspondence and receipts for work carried out.

A highly desirable pre-war, Six Cylinder MG with excellent performance, it is a delight to drive and suitable for long distance eventing or touring.
