Production of the E34 commenced on November 2, 1987 for the 535i, with 535i market launch being in January 1988 and other variants following a staggered launch. The August 1992 535i for sale here represents one of the last non M car big straight six e34's produced making it collectable in the future.

The highest six-cylinder model (except for the M5) was the 535i. Despite the '535i' model designation and '3.5' casting on the intake manifold, the BMW M30 engine found in the E34 535i actually has a displacement of 3.4 litres.

A total of 57,570 e34 535i were produced (see Wikipedia). This 535i model is getting rare. There are only 32 existing e34 535i's driving on the UK roads in 2020 (see

It took me two years to find a 535i that was low mileage, original and with detailed BMW service history. That was four years ago and now you will not find an e34 in this condition. I have had my enjoyment from this car and it's time to let it go to another collector to make room in my barn for my next classic car.

As an August 1992 model this one is the last of the e34's with the M30 engines before BMW switched to the V8 530 and 540. The engine was given the nicknames of 'Big Six' and 'Senior Six', and prior to the introduction of the BMW M70 V12 engine in 1987, the M30 was BMW's most powerful and largest regular production engine.
Ward's have rated the M30 as one of the "Top Engines of the 20th Century".

The e34 designers built upon much of the learning from the e32 7 series launched a few years prior. Special attention was paid to aerodynamics, with the E34 basic sedan having a drag coefficient of 0.30. The sales brochure promoted it as a drivers car and boasted that the e34 had the most powerful brakes of any luxury car in its class.

A bit more about this cars history:
It was made in Dingolfing Bavaria, Germany.

Being the SE model it came with the top of the range features of the computer, blaupunkt stereo, sports and economy modes, etc.... however the Managing Director that purchased this car specified more unusual options making this e34 535i very special and highly collectable:
From new extra was paid for shadow-line (to dechrome making the look cleaner with just red and black),
M-sports suspension,
M-sports leather steering wheel,
lift-up-and-slide-back electric sunroof,
head light and fog light washers,
armrest front/driver passenger,
mechanically adjustable rear headrests,
warning triangle and first aid kit.
The original owner sold the car to his business partner. Through the time of business ownership (until 2013) all servicing was BMW main dealer. In 2011 after many years of ownership that gentleman (also a classic car collector) registered it in his daughters name. Then in 2017 when he upgraded to a Jaguar E-type I acquired the car.

The paint work is fully original and pristine because this e34 has been stored in garages all of it's life. You can not fault this cars appearance with paintwork that is show standard top and underneath. (many more photos and a walk-around video can be provided on request).

The alloys are in amazing condition; better at 28 years old than the alloys on my 5 year old BMW. All four alloys have the proper Continental premium tyres on with plenty of tread. If you were using this car for shows you may wish to replace one of the alloys which has a small imperfection about the size of a 5p piece only. You could do so with the spare wheel in the boot that is like new.

All windows are the original BMW ones. All panels are straight with immaculate shut lines and the car has never been in an accident.

The seats in the car are pristine. Not a mark or tear on them. The bolsters are all as new and the back seat doesn't look like it's been sat on. All carpets clean up like new and the car has a set of mats. The dashboard is crack free and all the instrument panels work perfectly with no character missing and no LED failure.

If you are a classic collector/investor you'll love the first aid kit which has never been unwrapped and the tool kit which equally looks unused. The original BMW torch (which so often gets lost from these e34's) is still in it's glove box slot. The original Blaupunkt Toronto stereo is in the car (but unfortunately is not working).

This car was specified from new with the tilt and slide sunroof. The sunroof and all other electrics are in full working order. Rear head rests are also fitted in this car together with driver and passenger arm rests in the front.

The drive in this 535i is effortless. The automatic gearbox is very smooth and despite the fact that this car was one of very few 5 series (before introduction of the Sports model) to have the rare M-sports suspension it is far smoother than modern day BMW's. The ride is helped by the very wide tyres that absorb any bumps in the road.

The straight-six engine is a dream. Not loud and very understated. With 3.5 litres under the bonnet this old girl lifts up her skirt and runs when needed. Being the M30 this car has manual tappets and occasionally they need adjusting (they are not self adjusting as you get in the V8's). I had the tappets adjusted in a major service carried out by a BMW specialist.

The car has two keys. It has the original BMW alarm connected to the central locking. The car also has a high spec immobiliser installed from new. Both work fine and make the car very secure. They do cause a drain on the battery if the car is unused for long periods of time. Because I do very few miles in the car I had a battery isolation switch installed and a new battery installed. A key is in the boot to switch off the battery when the car is not in use for long periods of time. This preserves the battery.

During my ownership I have done about 2,000 miles in this lovely modern classic. It had a full comprehensive service on my purchase and during my ownership I have had a new viscous fan and a new water pump installed plus a renewed valve cover gasket was fitted which solved a small oil leak (all done by a BMW specialist garage). Drive belt was replaced at 57,336 miles and new brake discs and pads (front and rear) were fitted at 57,521 miles. MOT is until November 2020.

This car has been maintained to the highest standards as proven by a file of paper work with thousands of pounds of receipts for every bit of work ever done. Many old MOT's are also in the file to help preserve the cars history. In total the service book has 13 main dealer BMW stamps in. The remainder of services have all been by BMW specialists.
