1972 Mercedes 220D saloon. Left hand drive, was originally a Spanish car but was imported into the UK several years ago, and is UK registered wth the V5C here and in my name.

I bought it earlier this year as a rolling restoration project, but unfortunately the teeth on the starter gear have now worn to the point that it no longer starts on the button. It was a runner when I bought it, although it was temperamental to start even then, and the engine seemed healthy enough, with no smoke or untoward noises, and it ran up to temperature as it should. It would still start now with a tow start, athough that has been difficult to arrange during lockdown. Replacement parts are readily available as they are common to all the 4-cylinder Mercedes engines of that era.

It's not really drivable at the moment as the brakes need attention - the nearside front caliper being the worst, the dust seals have perished and the pistons were sticking badly. I bought a replacement seal kit which comes with the car. Other than that it seems OK mechanically - I drove it a short distance when I first bought it, clutch and gearbox worked OK although I only got into second gear.

The interior isn't in bad condition - the seats are the usual bombproof Mercedes vinyl and apart from needing a bit of a clean they are in good condition. The door cards are all present although the offside front is a little warped at the front edge. The headlining has been repaired in places and is hanging down a bit by the rear screen.

Lights, wipers, indicators, horn, heater etc. all work. I'm not convinced the heated rear window is working, and the hazard switch is missing, but otherwise the electrics seem to be fully functional. Windows are manual all round, although the car does have power steering and central locking.

The bodywork needs attention, as usual on this model. The car was originally beige, but was resprayed in metallic green some years ago, which I think quite suits the car but the paint does need attention in places. Rust wise the worst bit of the bodywork is the bottom of the offside rear wing. The paint is also peeling quite badly just above the rear screen, although the rust underneath does seem to just be surface, and the paint on the bonnet is somewhat patchy too. Underneath does need welding in several places but it isn't a complete rot box by any stretch. There is also a crack in the windscreen near the bottom on the passenger side.

I'm selling the car somewhat reluctantly as I bought it fully intending to get it roadworthy and use it, but unfortunately whilst I'm happy to do bodywork and brakes I don't have the space or the facilities to undertake the ring gear replacement, so the car really needs to go to someone who can carry out the work and get the car back on the road.

Contact by email preferred as I can't always answer the phone. The car is in Norfolk.
