ERICH BITTER AND HIS CARS – A BRIEF HISTORY:
Erich Bitter is an exceptionally talented man, a cycle racer, a car racer, a gifted artist and a brilliant designer, with a great knowledge and understanding of mechanics. He was born in 1933, in Schwelm Germany, and his story and the story of his cars is truly fascinating. He became a professional racing cyclist by the age of 16, competed in the Tour de France and became one of Germany’s top riders. He was a professional racing driver between ‘58 and ’69, driving for Opel in 1968, having great success with their new ‘Rekord’. In 1958, at the age of 25, he set up a flourishing automotive marketing business, and, in the mid 60s, he was appointed the official German importer of Abarths, and was also awarded the German concession for the Italian sporting marque of Intermeccanica. The latter caused him terrible quality problems, resulting in severe warranty claims, which acted as a salutary business lesson for him. As a result, he approached Opel in 1970, with whom he already had a close relationship, to suggest the idea of using their ‘Diplomat’ model as the base for a new exotic coupe. This enabled him to start building cars in 1973, with the launch of the Bitter CD Coupe – a spectacular Bitter body and interior, on Diplomat running gear, which used the same Chevrolet 5.3 L V8. 6 years later, Opel ceased production of the Diplomat and the last CD Coupe was built in early 1979. Only 390 Bitter CDs were built between the end of ’73 and the beginning of ‘79. However, Erich Bitter had started talks with Opel in 1977 about using their Senator for his next car. He was given full cooperation by Opel and his new Bitter SC prototype was first shown at the Frankfurt Motor Show in September 1979. As before, Erich Bitter had removed the Senator body and interior and replaced them with his own sporty coupe design and exotic high-quality leather interior, leaving the very advanced Senator’s running gear in place, and the package was offered with an Opel Warranty. The first Bitter SCs came out of the factory at Schwelm, in late 1980. Production came to a premature and tragic end in early 1986, owing to ‘mis-appropriation’ of funds by a European Bitter company CEO, who was later officially ousted. At that time, 450 Bitter SCs had been made: 420 SC Coupes, 25 SC Cabriolets, 5 SC Sedan 4-doors.
However, a handful of SCs were later built by Erich Bitter and his small remaining team, at the Bitter factory in Schwelm, from parts held in stock before Feb 1986.

ORIGINATION OF THIS CAR:
Fairly promptly after the fall of the Berlin Wall in 1989, Mr Pawlac, a successful baker from East Berlin, became friendly with Erich Bitter and persuaded him to build a Bitter SC Cabrio for him and his wife, from the last remaining pieces left at Schwelm. He agreed - the build process is witnessed on DVD – and this car was completed and first registered in August 1990. The car was the revered and cherished ‘pride-and-joy’ of the Pawlacs, who covered 149,163 kms in the following 15 years, prior to selling it to me in 2005. I imported it into the UK and used it during the summer months at my house in Spain. On a ‘rapid’ trip to Madrid Airport, the original 3.9 L straight six Opel engine expired. The car was shipped back to the UK, to Derek Hunt of Automonza, probably the UK’s most knowledgeable authority on Opel Senators and Monzas, Bitters and Lotus Carltons – he had already rebuilt my 1985 Opel Monza with a 24 V Senator engine with many other upgrades. We made the decision to impose a Chevrolet LS2 all alloy 6.0L V8, producing an output in excess of 400 bhp, at the flywheel, sourced from a nearly new Holden Monaro, (whose owner was installing a new LS7), together with a new 6 speed manual Tremec Gearbox. These were purchased from the highly respected specialist Paul Spinks of Wortec, Goodwood. We knew that the massive increase in power was going to require a complete rebuild of the car, with major upgrades in all areas. This work took nearly 10 years to perfect, with an investment of over £100,000. The work was carried out by Derek Hunt of Automonza, using top-grade specialists where necessary. The result has produced a unique Bitter SC Cabrio which is utterly sensational. 3,500 trouble-free miles have been covered since the rebuild.
