RetroMarques Ltd is pleased to offer for sale on behalf of the owner: 1977 Triumph Stag Mk2 Auto ‘UAY 84S’

This 1977 and recently road-tax free Stag, has just returned from ex-pat life in France, the owner having decided to switch to a LHD classic. Complete with the original factory hard-top and with quite a comprehensive history file, this Stag offers very affordable entry into Stag ownership and a classic car which can be enjoyed yet also improved, ideally suiting someone with a modest budget.

Details:
Triumph Stag Mk2 Auto, RHD
Chassis No: LD44399A
Eng No: LF044425HEA
First Reg: 1 Aug 77
Mileage: 63,744
MoT Test: on purchase (French Controle Technique on file)

This Stag was produced in the last 1,000 or so of production, so a very late Mk2 version and actually registered for the road after Stag production had finished! The history file has folders for paperwork during the 80s, 90s and 2000-onwards, so there is a good deal known about the car. Prior to the present owner’s purchase in 2017, we carried out a pre-purchase inspection, recommending some work to be done and following purchase and some work completed, the Stag was collected and departed for Southern France.

The owner was fortunate to live near Bezier and therefore close to a workshop specialising in Triumphs! Plenty of invoicing from that workshop along with UK-based specialists for parts supply show that the car was regularly serviced and has been well-maintained.

‘UAY’ has been regularly used and enjoyed, indeed accruing some 4500 miles in the past year alone, which is invariably a good sign of reliability, reinforced by the fact that the owner confidently drove back from Southern France to us with no problems to note.

A little choke and the Stag starts easily and then moves off smoothly with no untoward noises from the auto box or drivetrain, just a lovely V8 burble from the twin exhaust. Out on the road the steering is smooth, throttle responsive with plenty of torque and the brakes pulling her up strong and straight. The oil pressure is good and water temperature sits nicely on normal. Overall a very pleasant driving experience with nothing to detract and everything appears to work normally.

The bodywork is quite good, with no obvious sign of corrosion, noting that two repairs have been recently completed and there are 2 small bubbles on the lower rear wing. The paint is ‘fair’ and some shade variation may be noted in the right light, especially on the 2 doors (earlier repairs) and some cracking to an area of paint on the scuttle (photo). The interior is quite presentable with just some nicks evident to the seat base material. All instruments and switches are present and functioning correctly. There is a switch for the Kenlowe fan and a later stereo unit is fitted.

The factory hardtop is in good condition, as is the hood which is perfectly usable and a nice tight fit.

In summary a very late Mk2 Stag to drive – with confidence - and to enjoy, yet also with scope for improvement. The factory hardtop and extensive history file are both desirable and a full professional valet has her looking her best!
