1987 Peugeot 205 1.9 GTI Completely standard, For Sale
Peugeot 205 1.9 GTI Phase 1 – Completely standard, fully recommissioned, in daily use. 115K, 2 keys, stunning car, huge amount of service history.
I am selling this Peugeot 205 GTI as I have now ‘scratched the itch’ to own one again 20 years on. It has not disappointed at all and I have loved the drive, the smell, playing 80s music and to some extent the attention it receives, of which there’s always a lot. I have used the car to commute to work which is a 16-mile B road journey. The Peugeot has been brilliant fun and not missed a beat.
Before I used the car, I had a local garage complete a multi-point check on it. The purpose of this was to ensure I’d not bought a poorly maintained car and secondly to make sure it was ready to be regularly used. The garage re-furbished the brake callipers, and bled the brakes, adjusted the clutch and serviced the steering rack, these were the only things they advised. This work made the car a lot more usable, the previous owner had not used it much and as a result some working components had stiffened up.
The gentleman I bought the car from had recommissioned many parts of it and there are receipts in the service history to substantiate the work. This included, new rear beam, new discs and pads all round, new serpentine belts, new water pump and cambelt, new exhaust (complete system), dizzy cap, rotor arm, plugs, air filter, oil filter, fuel filter, battery, injection valve, central locking actuator (now fully recommissioned callipers), refurbished and fully powder coated wheels, new front springs and shock absorbers. Furthermore, it has had all of the electrical components checked so everything is working as it should be. As a result, it is completely reliable, an absolute pleasure to drive and completely standard, as if it had just left the factory.
Engine, it is responsive and still powerful making the 880kg car keep up with modern day traffic with ease, it doesn’t burn or drop oil and the manifold is fully intact with no cracks, it is quiet on tick over and does not smoke under hard acceleration.
Gearbox/Transmission, my opinion of the 205 box has been changed since owning this one. It is direct and not ‘sloppy’ as I remember. The clutch is smooth and does not judder at all pulling away, making daily commute, or weekend driving easy.
Suspension, the suspension is completely standard but still instils confidence in the car’s ability on any B road. There’s no unwanted knocks, creaks or bangs and the ride is firm yet comfortable.
Brakes, since my local garage bled the brakes and refurbished the callipers, they are a lot better. However, compared with modern brakes they are not super sharp. However, they pull up true and the car does not squirm under heavy breaking, the pedal is firm too.
Steering, since my local garage serviced it, the steering is as light as you’d expect for a non-power steering model. Parking is a bit heavy, but once moving it is nice and direct. The car turns in well and there is no evidence of excessive wear.
Interior, the seat bolsters are all good and there is no ripping in the leather. The cloth as been repaired professionally on the driver’s seat and there is some spare cloth available which will come with the car. The foam is still good and not broken down at all. I have been using leather conditioner regularly to keep the 33-year-old leather as supple as possible. All the lights work, and all of the switch gear works, including the blowers. The original stereo is suppled with the car, but it has a more modern iPod compatible unit with it. The parcel shelf has NO holes in it and it has standard speakers throughout.
Bodywork, as you can see from the pictures the body work is very good for a 33-year-old car. It has been recommissioned in it’s time and I believe this was done within the last 2 years. The underside of the car is solid and without structural rust , and it has been protected with underseal. The sunroof works and does not leak, and the bodywork is free of dents and scratches. In short it is very presentable for 33 years old.
Overall this is a very good example of the 1.9 GTI. It is unmolested and has been given the appropriate care it needs to ensure it will remain on the road for the foreseeable future. The car comes with a huge amount of service history, all of the original books, an original bill of sale, a 205-tuning manual, all of the past MOTs, 2 keys and the original Peugeot service book folder. MOT is due August 2020, happy to put 12 months on it for the sale.
I am happy to answer any questions about the car. I am only selling it as I have recommissioned my own classic which I have owned for 20 years – I have now begun using this, so it is time to move the Peugeot on.
