1955 Matchless G9
A very presentable example of this fully restored fine British twin. Purchased by myself around two years ago just as the previous owner had completed the full and very proficient restoration. I believe it was something of a labour of love having taken a few years to complete, but very sadly, his heath had deteriorated to ride it much. He did explain he enjoyed restoring motorcycles more than riding, and there is clearly much to admire in his work. I basically finished it off. Very little to do – set valves, checked timing, filled with fluids, attached a few remaining pieces of tinware, polished it and then rode it. So far it has done 987 miles from the restoration, never ridden in the rain, kept in a tidy garage and generally been caressed by me since. It is in extremely good condition. Not mint – but cannot be far from it. The paintwork is gloriously deep and unmarked, engine and casings are very well presented, and chrome/rims/spokes basically as new. All original as far as I can see, with NOS where required.
Something about myself perhaps. I am a private enthusiast, an engineer by profession with long experience of all manner of motorcycles. I have 4 more at present, and I am particular about all my various bits of machinery. All my motorcycles are in excellent condition regardless of whether I have restored them or not, and the Matchless is no exception. However, I have other projects which await me, and as I still have to work for a living, time is therefore limited to attend to those and keep the Matchless in the first class condition I like my motorcycles to be in. Something has to give – so the Matchless it is. Further details as follows.
500cc OHV twin, single AMAL carb. Fully rebuilt. Nice looking thing with mildly polished covers. Mag is good, oil pumps fine, good scavenge, Castrol 20/50 in at present. Lovely burble with the Megaphone exhausts, pulls very well from low down, no real need to adjust advance/retard unless a very steep hill. Bit of knack required when starting from cold, fine when hot. Being totally honest, there are couple of minor weeps. One at the very well- known dynamo seal at the timing cover. Poor design basically. Tightened it up a little, seems to help. Another looks to be at the cylinder head. This is no surprise as the engine is basically still newly rebuilt. A nip up of the 8 x ¼ WW head nuts should cure it. Engine no 55/G9 26874 as per crankcase.
Burman 4 speed. It works. That’s about all that can be said.
Superb black paintwork and lining. It really is most impressive and takes wax very well. The deep shine is truly remarkable. Pictures tell all.
Running gear
Rims excellent, stainless spokes, front drum needs adjustment – it grabs a little on application – rear is fine. Suspension – well it obviously has Jampots which are very good, and the front Teledraulics are filled with Silkolene SAE30 which works very well. Speedometer works fine, drive at rear.
Original 6V. Everything works. Modern reg/rec under the seat, in line fuse to prevent draining the battery if left. Dynamo charges well. Charming period bullet sidelights – my favourite part of the bike.
Chaincase fitted with the improved club seal, seat very good, reserve petcock, primary and drive chains fine. Frame is very good with number A33002 as per logbook. Cannot see anything in the frame itself.

In summary, a really fine example and a joy to ride. I realize the asking price may be strong, but I feel it fairly represents the work that has gone into it, the retained originality and the highly satisfactory overall condition.
