This VW T2 Bay Window is a smart example of an iconic classic camper, presented in very good condition following substantial renovation work. The engine is a 1.6-litre air-cooled flat-four, coupled to a four-speed manual transmission. The odometer indicates 71,307 miles.
Chassis dating tables indicate that this T2 was built in the first half of 1972. A left-hand drive example, it may well have left the factory painted blue, and a note on the HPI report shows a recorded colour change to white in 2009. It has had 11 registered keepers in the UK, and the current owner acquired the camper just over four years ago. He has since enjoyed some 8,000 miles on the road.
Its bodywork is in good condition, with no evident panel damage or scrapes. The seller notes only some minor surface rust starting to appear on the driver’s door sill, and at the bottom of the panels down the flanks. There is also some pitting and tarnishing on the driver’s door mirror. Overall, it presents well, with a smooth finish in the paint, and vibrant orange accents for the roof, front badge, and dust valve caps. A smart roof rack and metal luggage frame is installed, and it rides on 15-inch Porsche ‘tele dial’ alloy wheels finished in gloss black.
Inside, the cabin theme mirrors the exterior, with a combination of white and orange throughout. There is a small hole and scuff on the driver’s seat cover, and minor tears in the rear seat that converts to a daybed. All of the other trim presents well. The wooden cupboards and shelves are all original, as is the flip-down table, and there are convenient storage cubby holes throughout. The fridge under the sink is original but is not currently operational. Other smart 1970s accessories include an original awning, as well as a retro cool box.
Mechanically, this T2 is in superb order, benefitting from a replacement engine fitted in October 2018 by VW specialist Jack’s Garage in Ladbroke Grove. The number stamped on the casing shows it as an ‘AS’ engine, which denotes the more powerful 50bhp 1600cc motor from a slightly later T2. This work also included a cosmetic tidy-up of the engine bay, along with a rebuilt carburettor, fresh rocker covers and gaskets, and new heat exchangers for the exhaust system. All fuel lines and filters were renewed, as well as the fuel tank breathers, the distributor cap, HT ignition leads, and the starter motor terminals. The tappets were set, carburettor tuned, ignition timing adjusted, and the engine was given a full oil change service.
During this same 2018 overhaul, the gearbox flange seals were replaced, and the gear oil was drained and replenished. A new front gear rod bush was fitted, along with a new gear selector plate, three-piece clutch kit, cable, and release bearing guide. The complete front axle was replaced, both outer CV joint rubber boots were renewed, and the front and rear brakes were serviced, with a system bleed and fresh brake fluid. Finally, it was given a full wheel alignment and a thorough road test. This was a major refurbishment totalling £7,222.
In August 2019, it returned to Jack’s Garage for the second part of its refurbishment, comprising a new alternator, tidying up and rewiring of the fuse box, replacement of all fuses, and a new headlight relay. The windscreen washer pump, stereo, and 12-volt lighter socket were all rewired as well. Its ignition starter switch and barrel was replaced, as well as the steering rubber coupling, and the speedometer clock with a correct miles-per-hour unit. In total, the best part of £8,500 has been spent in the last two years to bring this van up to a very good running standard.
There is little history accompanying this T2 Bay, but the receipts from the most recent work are all present, detailing the comprehensive overhaul. It also comes with a good set of spare parts, including fuses, bulbs, fan belts and gasket seals.
This Volkswagen T2 Bay Window is a great example of an instantly recognisable classic, which finds fans all over the world. While there are a few minor cosmetic imperfections that could be tidied up in due course, this is a reliable van in smart condition, finished in an unusual but eye-catching colour scheme. Perfect for touring Europe with its left-hand drive layout, this T2 is ready to enjoy as a leisure van all summer, and is sure to attract plenty of admiring glances.
