1975 Triumph Stag Automatic For Sale

|Welcome to the sale of our exceptional Triumph Stag Automatic|
We are a long established workshop, with over 30 years experience of Stags. We advertise our services (mechanical and body) in the SOC magazine, but we rarely sell vehicles, unless there are special circumstances. In this instance, we have been looking after the car for around 14 years, so we know it to be an honest example.
Presented in its original Maple with chestnut interior and V5/MOT matching VIN and engine numbers, it was first registered in July 1975, having it’s 3000 mile service the following June, then a service at the same garage, at least once a year, every year, until 1991; all of this is recorded in the original ‘Passport To Service’ book, the final entry being from September 1991, at 32300 miles.
In November 1991, a new owner takes over at 32535 and he continues the history in the form of a hand written notebook, detailing various works and services (at one or other of two local garages) and every MOT certificate, which then go in an unbroken run from 1991 to 2017, backing up the current indicated mileage of 49994.
Along with the MOT certificates and service book, there is a wallet with mint condition owner’s manuals and dealer lists, a factory pre service manual, various invoices and old tax discs, in fact, this is one of the most comprehensive history files we have ever seen.
The overall condition of the car is excellent, with no evidence of welding to the underside and none needed now. The paint is not entirely original, however, the written notes say that the vehicle had some paint in 1991/92, which was evidently done to a very high standard and remains lustrous and largely blemish free to this day. The chrome work is very good, although if you were being picky, eventually you would get around to giving the bumpers some attention.
The interior is lovely, with just the right amount of patina; the wood dash is clean and evenly coloured, all the instrumentation is complete and working, the seats are well stuffed and free of rips, tears and holes (save for the tiniest amount of wear on the driver’s seat bolster) and the seat belt buckles are the original style. Door trims and rear pockets have not been cut for speakers, although a modern CD head unit is fitted.
The hood and frame were professionally replaced in 2015 and work perfectly, plus this vehicle benefits from a factory hard top, which is in superb rust free condition and we believe to be original to the car. There is a certain amount of discolouration around the edges of the head lining and a small nick in one of the panels, but perfect tops are now getting extremely difficult to find and this is more than acceptably usable, again, one the best we have seen in recent years.
The wheels are unmarked reproduction alloys, which were fitted approximately 3 years ago (with new tyres) but we think we also have the originals in storage, should you wish to have them refurbished.
Mechanically, the engine is quiet and smooth with good oil pressure, the gearbox changes as it should, there isn’t even any diff whine! The drive is as good as you would want it to be, with no knocks, bangs or rattles, it’s pretty much as it would have been 45 years ago.
The vehicle comes with aftermarket floor mats and even a hardtop stand, which looks as though it has never been assembled.
I’m conscious that this description is turning into War & Peace, but it really is hard to know where to stop with this car.
No, it’s not perfect (very few Stags are) but it’s amongst the very best that we have seen, even fully restored cars often don’t come up to this standard.
There are things you could do to improve it (it would be a good basis for a Concours restoration, if that’s your bag) but you could just drive it and maintain it, safe in the knowledge that it would very much hold its own at any show or gathering.
Prior to sale, we will carry out a lubrication service and coolant change and, if required, we can have it MOT tested, although this is no longer obligatory, due to the car’s historic status.
Please feel free to contact us with any questions you may have (we also have many more images available) or to arrange an inspection, which we would recommend; we have a wheel free ramp and you are welcome to view the underside of the car at your leisure.
