Austin 7 Arrow Competition ‘65’

Of the numerous styles of sporting coachwork available on the Austin Seven, among the most handsome were those by A P Compton’s Arrow Coachworks, of Hanwell, London.

The ‘Competition 65’, fitted on the Seven ‘Nippy’ running chassis was purposeful and particularly attractive.

Today, there are just 8 known examples of this model recorded Worldwide.

Nothing is really known about this particular car until the mid 1960’s, when the ‘remains’ of it turned up at the garage of Ray Walker in Cambridge. Ray was a well-respected motor engineer and Austin 7 specialist who ran his garage from the 1950s to the 1990s and was the first President of the Cambridge Austin 7 and Vintage Car Club from 1967 for 30 years. He commenced restoration of the car.

Included in the extensive car’s documents is the history of BMF 888 from 1966 up to 1988 written by Ray Walker and including 3 photos from 1968 showing the car parked outside Ray’s garage next to an Arrow Competition ‘75’.

In 1991 the car was purchased by the well-known Austin 7 enthusiast, Curly Goodwin who undertook further restoration of the car to its original specification and toured extensively around Europe.

1n 1998 the car unfortunately sustained extensive accident damage and was totally rebuilt between over the next three years by respected restorer and Austin 7 Specialist – Ray Hood. This restoration is fully substantiated by extensive documentation and photographs.

In 2012, the car was acquired by Jim Blacklock, founder of the Norfolk Austin 7 Club who also founded and maintains the Austin 7 Arrow Register.

During his tenure, Jim has replaced the engine with a Rawson built modified Austin 7 Engine using a Phoenix pressure fed crank, Renault 4 pistons, conrods and big end shells, high pressure oil pump, remote oil filter and a trials/road type camshaft. Oversized inlet valves, stainless steel exhaust valves, a Ricardo cylinder head, 1.1/4 inch SU Carburettor, 4 branch exhaust manifold and Bosch distributor. A 4 blade cooling fan and heat shields over the exhaust manifold were also fitted.

The car was tested on Dynamometer with the engine producing 30.2 bhp at 4950 rpm.

The car needs to be seen to be fully appreciated and I can tell you that she feels very lively and handles extremely well.

This is car has full weather equipment which is in first class order plus a tonneau cover and side-screens.

This car, which is VSCC eligible, should prove ideal many different events and is great fun to drive.

Here are a few quick photographs taken in the garage as it was raining! Additional photographs and a video will be updated shortly.
