The Alvis 4.3 is the epitome of pre-War British sports cars and this is one of the best available. It is capable of over 100 mph and a 0-60 acceleration of around 10 seconds, an amazing performance for a car made over 80 years ago.

Alvis produced 166 4.3 chassis over the period 1936-1940 of which 56 were fitted with Tourer bodies. The shapeliest of these was the Vanden Plas (VP) Tourer but only 12 were produced before the onset of the War. Of these only two were made on the longer chassis of 10’ 7” and these two cars are highly valued today. This car is built to a VP design on the original 1937 long chassis No 13181 and has an interesting and well-documented provenance. It is in concours condition and is a pleasure to drive under modern traffic conditions.

This superb car has a fascinating history with is recorded in great detail in the Alvis Owners Club archives. Records show it was initially sold by Alvis in January 1937 with the Reg CDU 633 and fitted with an elegant Holbrook sports saloon body to a Charlesworth design which it retained for the next 30 years while passing through the hands of several owners. In the late 1960’s the then owner, Olaf Lund a well known car collector in Birmingham, had the top removed and an engine fitted by Forward Engineering. This may be deemed as sacrilege to some Alvis enthusiasts, but it did produce a delightful Tourer with an impressive turn of speed.

At the turn of the century the car, then clad in red and cream, was becoming decidedly tired. Following several changes of ownership it was then purchased by the current owner and a major rebuild undertaken returning it back to its 1937 original state but with new VP coachwork on the long chassis making it one of the rarest and exotic of all the 4.3’s. This unique rebuild was undertaken by the Alvis Engineering Company over the period 2013-15. It was fitted with a new Alvis 4.3 engine, No 15037, constructed to exacting standards with all the peripheral items renewed in or re-manufactured. The mechanical components are highly polished and neatly arranged and the coachwork is beautifully fashioned in a subtle blend of grey and black panelling with soft grey leather upholstery, a tight mohair hood and tonneau cover and colour coded wheels. On the road CDU 633 is surprisingly light and comfortable to drive with all the controls easily accessible. It has full documentation and receipts and various brochures. Altogether this car, for sheer beauty and drivability, is one of the best Alvis cars available on the market.
