1936 Riley 15/6 Kestrel

One of the most sought-after Riley saloons, the 6-cylinder Kestrel models have a special appeal to enthusiasts. The destruction of so many saloons over the years by special builders has considerably lessened the number of survivors, and, today, only around 9 original Kestrel 6-cylinder models are believed to exist.

The Kestrel design was particularly advanced when it was first seen in late 1932. The nascent years of motor car streamlining produced a variety of styles, but the Kestrel was not only one of the very first, it was also one of the most stylish and attractive, in keeping with prevailing ‘Art Deco’ trends in the automotive world.

The 15/6 engine had a capacity of 1726cc and gave a worthwhile increase of power compared to the previous 12/6 and 14/6 units the latter of which first appeared in 1929.

The 15/6 Kestrel made its first appearance in 1935, originally with ‘4 light’ coachwork before being replaced by the particularly elegant ‘6 light’ variant the following year.

This car, strikingly finished with maroon with beige leather interior trim has undergone extensive restoration in the past and presents exceptionally well. All brightwork has been re-plated and the leather trim and carpets are in excellent condition.

The car had an engine rebuild during 2012 and bills are supplied on file. As with the vast majority of Rileys of this period, the car is fitted with a pre-selector gearbox, making for effortless driving especially in traffic. Later in 2012 it was to join a private collection in Switzerland.

Amazingly the car was with her original owner for some 59 years, and in total has had just 5 owners from new. It has just returned to the UK and has been carefully checked and serviced.

Included in the documentation file is a FIVA identity card and full details of ownership.
A rare opportunity to acquire an excellent example of this desirable sporting saloon.
