The Renault 5 was launched in 1972 and was a revolutionary city car. Its styling was very ahead of it’s time and you wouldn’t think that it was a near 50 year-old design. As a result of it’s futuristic styling and affordability, “Le Car” was an enormous success, being produced from 1972 to 1996, selling over 5.5 million units and was the best-selling car in France from its introduction in ’72 all the way to 1986, an incredibly impressive run. However, it wasn’t until 1980 that they decided to make arguably its most radical and iconic variant, the Renault 5 Turbo.
The Turbo was vastly different from the Renault 5, cosmetically alone it had a sporty front splitter and alloy wheels, whilst the rear section featured giant rear wings which put the trend of widebodies on modern cars to shame. These crazy proportions with massive side vents give the car such a presence which is hard for a hot hatch to achieve. Beneath the skin there is a far more radical change, more specifically the position engine. On a regular Renault 5, like any other hatchback, the engine can be found in the front but the Turbo is a mid-engined beast, giving the car a baby supercar feel. Only adding to that supercar aesthetic is the fact that the stunning rear section of the car was designed by none other than Marcello Gandini, designer of numerous supercar icons such as the Alfa Romeo Montreal, the Bugatti EB110, Lamborghini Miura, Countach, Espada, Jarama, Lancia Stratos and countless others. The car we have on offer is the later Turbo 2 variant with a slight boost in acceleration, top speed and general performance to the original Turbo, or “Turbo 1” as it is often known.
Despite its supercar styling, mid-engined layout and incredible performance, the Renault 5 Turbo 2 manages to be a surprisingly comfortable car with cushy bucket seats and suspension that avoids being bone-crushingly harsh like so many performance cars nowadays and you can drive it like a normal car if you so wish and it fulfils this purpose very well. But when you have a Turbo 2, why would you want to do that?! Letting the hammer down brings out the thunderous whistle of the turbos which consequently kick in, putting the car from nippy to rapid in seconds. The acceleration is mind-bending, especially for a car of its age and combined with the wonderful sounds coming from behind you, this all makes for an adrenaline filled experience. It’s a car which can make even the most mundane of journey’s a thrill ride.
The Turbo 2 road-car’s performance certainly reflects the performance of the rally car it was produced to homologate. In rallying, the Turbo was an enormous success, winning the Monte Carlo Rally in 1981 on its first outing, proving its performance to the world. The Turbo would later dominate 1982 Tour de Corse Rallies too and marked the Turbo as another milestone in Renault’s impressive rally and motorsport history.
Our car is from the final year of production and is a beauty to behold. The Renault is finished in Midnight Black Noir and is quite rare with most being Red or White. The Black paint suits the car perfectly, giving it a more menacing feel, combined with the stunning colour-coded wheels. Combined with the original Beige cloth interior which is still in superb order, this makes for a spec which is nigh-on impossible to beat.
This is a beautiful example of one of the most admired and desirable Homologation cars of all time and is not to be missed.
