1964 Modified Riley One Point Five SOLD

|This lovely old girl has led an interesting life. She was the subject of an older restoration when she was expensively and extensively restored to FIA specification for taking part in Classic Road Rallies and has done a mere 6000 miles since then. She is very solid and very sound mechanically and bodily but being used primarily for rallies the bodywork cosmetics could be improved although as the photos hopefully show she is still quite a looker!|
The previous owner had her for 25 years and kept her in a heated garage throughout that time and started and used her regularly for short journeys but sold her due to his age. During those years he used the car to compete successfully in three classic rallies, one in Ireland and two in Spain. I bought her a year ago with thoughts of taking part in some rallies and events myself but plans have changed and the recent virus disruption has persuaded me that it's best to let her go rather than just leaving her stored away in a garage.
She starts on the button and drives really well with a very willing engine and lovely smooth gearbox.
The extensive specification sheet is as follows;
BODY - new front crossmember, new original BMC sills, new inner wings (bump stop area) repaired and reinforced, new chassis rails. All cavities waxolyed and the underneath undersealed. Complete rewiring in 1993 with a vintage reproduction loom.
ENGINE - complete engine rebuild as follows: crank reground, tuftrided and balanced, rods balanced, flywheel lightened, and balanced, block rebored, honed and skimmed with exhaust valve cutouts, new pistons, sump baffled, new oil pump, new timing chain and tensioner, new MGB standard profile cam, competition head gasket, new MGB head by respected specialist tuner Peter Burgess, ported, gas flowed etc with standard MGB valves (as homologated for Riley C.R 10:1), new rocker shaft with offset rocker bushes giving more lift, inlet manifold polished, S.U. carbs stripped and rebuilt with richer needles and springs, distributor rebuilt and modified by Aldon (non-vac) and fitted with electronic ignition module, new starter motor, new dynamo, new MGA spec clutch, new clutch master cylinder and slave cylinder, 3 into 1 exhaust manifold (as homologated) to big bore exhaust system with twin silencers, new electronic SU fuel pump, radiator rebuilt. Engine stabiliser fitted.
TRANSMISSION - gearbox rebuilt to standard, standard prop shaft rebuilt, axle rebuilt with new half shafts, bearings, seals and gaskets.
BRAKES - new master cylinder, new wheel cylinders, all new Kunifer pipework, aeroquip steel braided flexible hoses.
SUSPENSION - completely stripped off car and rebuilt. front and rear shock absorbers rebuilt and uprated by 33%. Marina TC front anti-roll bar fitted, new front tie rods and bushes, new front wishbone arms, new fulcrum pins and trunnions, new rear springs with one spring removed (i.e. 6 leaves) new U bolts with one inch lowering blocks, new shackle plates, nylatron bushes fitted to front of leaf springs to chassis (stops axle sideways float), front inner fulcrum pins, front lower outer fulcrum pins,. Standard rubber bushes fitted to upper fulcrum bolt. Original torsion bars retained but lowered about 1.5 inches. Thick washer on lower eyebolt to give slight negative camber, approx 1/2 degree.
WHEELS - four wider 4.5 inch steel wheels from a Morris Minor van fitted with Uniroyal Rallye 166/70/14 tyres.
INTERIOR - the interior is pretty much standard apart from a pair of matching red bucket seats (original seats come with the car), a fire extinguisher, a map reading light and a small additional gauge cluster below the dash fitted with additional switches, an ammeter and a clock and an original sixties sports type steering wheel from an Austin 1300 GT. There is a period Lucas reversing light on the boot and twin front Lucas 5 inch fog lights at the front. The radio isn't working as the on/off switch is broken. Inertia reel seatbelts fitted.
To sum up, the modifications don't detract from driving the car in everyday use and if someone is looking for a properly uprated Riley or a good starting point for classic rallies then this would be well worth consideration with all the work that has gone into it. She is obviously a bit nippier than your standard Riley One Point Five being pretty much at MGA spec and sounds a bit different but not so loud as to raise eyebrows, just a nice sporty sounding note. There is a box full of history files with her including 49 old bills and invoices plus the dealers sales invoice when the previous owner acquired her in 1994, 35 old photos from rallies, photocopied ownership history supplied by DVLA going back to 1977, 26 old MOT certificates, 13 old tax discs and a facsimile of original 1964 tax disc in the windscreen, original FIA papers, three competitors event folders from rallies undertaken, original BMC Driver's handbook and BMC Owner's Service Parts List book.
