‘Betty’ has been modified and improved for modern driving while also being customised visually throughout.
Drive Train
Featuring a late 1970’s MGB 1800cc engine and matching rear axle the cruising speed is at a more viable level. The original 4 speed column change has been retained, bypassing the need to cut the tunnel / bulkhead.
The axle widens the rear by ½” either side, filling the arches perfectly. With the MGB axle ratio the revs to road speed is correct. The rear studs have been changed from the original MGB type, so that all four wheels use the same stud threads.
The wheels are KN Minator with an ideal width suiting the mild custom look.
Electronic Ignition. New alternator. Fully serviced engine, tuned etc. Electric fan fitted to aid cooling the larger 1800cc engine, working on temp sensor. New battery, coil, cap, leads, plugs etc.
Runs and pulls well as a sports car engine should do in a small 1950’s commercial van!
Interior
The gauges from the MGB have been fitted, Rev counter, oil, temp, clock, fuel speedo. A new centre console has been built following the lines of the existing dash with a quality music system, featuring an amplifier in the van storage box. DAB and conventional radio, USB socket, power sockets etc. Footwell and interior lights wired from door switches. Flip sunvisors both sides with lights in mirrors. New cabling has been installed for bonnet and choke.
Everything has been rewired.
The interior has been professionally upholstered. The whole floor and panelling (sides and roof) have been sound proofed, then carpeted throughout. The van sides and roof are plywood which is then lined with professional pile covering. The door cards and front roof section are buttoned in two tone, with matching foam layers and vinyl covering on the console.
Fiesta seats with purple tint.
Rear windows darkened.
Large storage box built, fitted behind seats with spare wheel holder and cover.
Paint and Finish
The whole van was stripped (images available), treated, etched, deep primer and sanded. Silver sealer coat, aluminium base coat, 8 layers of deep purple candy. 4 layers 2pak clear coat, colour sanded then machine polished.
The paint is specialist with druid / celtic themed artwork almost hidden within the colouring. It shows up in bright sun when the candy paint shimmers and changes from metallic purple through to a deep almost black tone.
The general paint finish is good but not perfect high-end show quality.
Most support items are platinum style painted, mirrors, lights, head light surrounds etc. This enhances the custom warm tones of the paint.
Double side exit exhaust professionally built and fitted.
De-bumpered, grille simplified, minimalist reduction on lights at the rear, from three to one. Rear number plate lit from its chrome fixing bolts (led). Apart from headlights, all lights are LED, including all dash lights. Indicators are now on top of wings, using amber led bulbs. Purple effect lights with rotating swirl on grille purely for shows etc (including purple subtle light in bonnet vent).
As well as these images there is a comprehensive video with engine running available.
General
Custom vehicles are made as a creative labour of love, a reflection of the owner in some ways. She is not to everyone’s taste, fair enough. I love her and the look is very stylish and grabs attention. Without doubt not for the ‘purist’! Naturally a lot of money and time has been spent on Betty, but I need to vent my creative needs on something new now, so she needs a loving home.
A real head turner at any show and a solid reliable daily user. All paperwork, history and manuals plus correctly registered V5. MOT exempt and free tax as historical vehicle.
You can see pretty much 100% of the car, especially if you check the video. So there is no need to waste our time please, if you are genuinely interested then email to arrange buying her (Please don’t message here or leave your comments or opinions)
IF anything needs doing it might be the tappets are ticking a little, and if she’s not used regularly the gear selection linkages gum up a bit sometimes. But that’s it, she’s ready to be driven and create crowds of admirers
Offers around £12’000 please, cash only. North Norfolk.
