Offered for sale we have a great example Triumphs Lauded GT6 coupe.

The GT6 was a very early example of what manufacturers currently call platform sharing, in this case it shared much (Also Michelotti designed) Triumph Spitfire. With the 948cc Standard engine making 63 bhp, the Spitfire was an ideal competitor to the Austin Healey Sprite and when it turned out to be a success, Triumph went back to Michelotti asking for a hardtopped coupe version of the car which was to be marketed as the Spitfire GT.

Elegant though it was, the additional bodywork added a significant amount of bulk so the plan was put on hold temporarily but not until the competition department had seen the prototype and taken a mould from it to use as a the basis for a Le Mans Spitfire. The fastback style improved the car’s high-speed aerodynamics which made it ideal for the constant high-speed running at Le Mans and Triumph duly took 13th overall and first in class.

To capitalise on it, the company decided to produce a roadgoing version of the racer, solving the weight issue by using the 2-litre straight-six – essentially the rolling engine/chassis of the Vitesse.

Rated at 95 bhp, this created a car which was very different from the model on which it was based. The Spitfire GT tag was changed to GT6 and the advertising campaign drew heavily on the Le Mans success. The GT6 model was produced from 1965 till 1973 when it was cancelled due to poor sales against the MGB GT.

This particular car was first sold 27th April 1973. Its first owner was a Mr Charles Stone of Hampdon, London. The car has a comprehensive service record with bills dating from the 70's and MOT certificates from the mid 80's. The car had a body refresh in 1990 and then again in 2001 including a full respray in it's original french blue. Other highlights include a reconditioned differential, gearbox work including new bushes, speedo cable and overdrive repair. All engine valves replaced including the seats and the guides and head gasket replacement. We will also give the car a coolant and oil change before it leaves us as well as fitting a new alternator for added peace of mind. A glance at the cars MOT history (Which can be viewed online) shows a car that has obviously been well cared for.

The interior is in good condition also, the original (notoriously uncomfortable) seats have been exchanged for MX5 units which makes driving a more pleasant experience and a modern radio is included but has not been wired in.

The paint presents very well even from close up (See pictures), but does have some imperfections- it's not a new car after all. Pictures of these can be provided on request.

Delivery is available on all our cars, please contact us for more details.
