The iconic BMW 2002 tii (standing for Touring International Injected) is a high-performance sports version of the standard BMW 2002, which in turn was a 2-door version of the BMW 2000, a top-of-the line car in the Neue Klasse BMW line-up in the 1970s. The new range of cars saved BMW from bankruptcy. Also seen in the less driveable 2002 Turbo form, the much more usable tii has remained the model that people really want. Very successful in all forms of motorsport the 2002 tii went on to spawn the 323i and of course eventually the M3 its spiritual successor.
I recommend James Taylor’s excellent BMW 2002 Reference guide. The tii very rarely seen for sale at all in RHD, and this highly desirable round tail lamp model, known by aficionados as the Model 71 saloon, was registered in September 1973 and is one of the last of just 2,447 RHD models. This model is much preferred to the later Model 73 saloon square brake light cars. Our car has BMW Turbine wheels, original seats, front and rear (no rips or tears), period correct and refurbished Momo prototipo steering wheel. Blaupunkt/BMW branded period radio. This very car was the subject of a 6 page feature in Classics Monthly in December 2008. FIVA Carte d’identite. Certificate of Authenticity from BMW Munich. Matching numbers of course. Just six previous owners in 47 years. A car that has been maintained by the BMW 2002 tii owner’s club recommended specialists. The BMW legend Pat Gill of Cooks Ferry Engineering personally worked on this car between 2015 and 2016 before his retirement, latterly looked after by Wren Motorsports in Dorset. In 6 years of our ownership no expense has been spared on this car mechanically. The work and main bills are set out below. This car is part of a much larger collection. Used regularly but sparingly it has also been used once a year by my wife as her gentle regularity rally car and has always performed brilliantly. Never a DNF. Poppy Rally in Belgium, Three Castles in Wales (June 2015), Summer Marathon in Italy (June 2019), two one day events in England (October 2015 and 2017). Always much admired for performance and comfort and style. Very useable, 30plus mpg, no road tax, easy motorway cruising thanks to the very slick 5 speed gear box. LSD which some think may point to it having some Alpina modifications. Some Alpina badging but it is not being sold as such. Those Alpina cars are exceedingly rare/valuable.

Car now showing 11,759 miles. Faulty speedo change at 72,500 so estimated roughly 84,000 actual miles.
We’ve always thought proper preparation helps performance and hence a good service before each outing. This is my wife’s “soft rally” car, as I run a slightly more serious 1960s Porsche for similar or more hard core events. Driven by her with me as navigator. Class winner on numerous outings. It has minimal regularity alterations, essentially a Brantz and a stop watch, both of which can easily be taken out to return it to normal road use. The regularity use just goes to show how reliable it is and normal road use would obviously not trouble the car. Never used off road or for any special stage work.
Cosmetically the car is authentic with a few scrapes and scratches and perhaps it is obvious that it is not a trailer queen. Wren Classics just took care of some under body welding. However, the car could easily be tidied up to present very well cosmetically. Part of the charm of the car is the authenticity and rugged appearance. The car has an excellent stance and road presence. Drives really sweetly. Cosmetics aside, the rarity and sound mechanical under pinnings are the essential thing here.
Realistically priced at £27,500 and much interest has already been shown. This is a great car.
