1962 Austin Healey MkII Fast road/rally car SOLD

Nothing is more demanding for a car than rallying, therefore manufactures have used long distance and stage rallying to prove their cars reliability and performance since motoring began. Austin Healey was no exception and with the employment of famous drivers such as Pat Moss and Paddy Hopkirk during the 1950’s and 60’s Donald Healey put his cars through their paces for the ultimate test of endurance and reliability ultimately selling more cars due to the BMC works success.

If you’re considering a Healey then a mirage to the 1960’s works success is the perfect match. This is not a car dressed up in works clothing, this is a car that was built and developed by Austin Healey expert, Kevin Law for a client in 1985-86’ to works rally specification for long road rally events.

Built from the ground up from a UK RHD 3000 MkII, this rally car was produced to be reliable, torquey and purposeful car whilst being well mannered and comfortable over long distances.

Able to be used for competition, regularity and tours as well as short journey driving, this Healey competed in the 1988 and 1989 Marathon rallies and finished 45th out of 120 in the first year and a very respectable top ten in 1989. Included in the photographs below, there’s some details from listing the spec as well as the 32 competitive rallies this car had entered and competed in, the last of which was in 2013.

How does the car look now? Well, you might expect a rally car of this vintage to be a scruffy mess with a good story, but it is, in fact quite the opposite. The car is very well presented with excellent paint work and used patina, the interior is simple and correct with a purposeful, well thought out layout and configuration.

The engine and running gear is absolutely spot on – great torque, power and delivery from this well-mannered 102 mm stroked engine (stroked crank to 3. 5L). The car is running on triple 45 webers with a rally performance orchard restoration engine. Std rear axle and straight cut gear set. The steering is direct and precise with little play in the steering box, just as you would expect.

It is clear this car has been incredibly well looked after and maintained with no expense spared.

If you’re looking for a road tour, regularity rally car, competition car or just a bit of fast road fun, this is certainly one to be considered.
