1936 Bentley 3 ½-litre Barker two-door sports saloon For Sale by Auction

Following on from our highly successful 86% sold May auction, Bonhams Motoring are delighted to present 115 motor cars and 11 motorcycles in our 25th July Live and Online auction. For more information and to view more pictures and videos of each lot please visit Property from a Deceased Estate 1936 Bentley 3 ½-litre Barker two-door sports saloon Coachwork by Barker Registration no. CXY 11 Chassis no. B174FB Odometer Reading: TBA MoT Expiry: Exempt *Features in 'Fifty Years of the Marque' (page 181) *Pillarless Barker body design *Some early correspondence Described in Johnnie Green's 'Fifty Years of the Marque' as a "pleasing two-door swept back saloon" this purposeful-looking model's lines are accentuated by the two-tone black and light-blue paintwork, and its looks are enhanced by the single-mount spare wheel: the wings have been re-painted in the past. The interior, trimmed in mid-blue, features a nickel-silver dashboard and an internal tool tray. Last run in early 2019 light re-commissioning is advised. This lot is accompanied by copies of the continuation logbook and a letter dated 20 August 1955 from previous owner A.F. Welch (who bought the car in 1937) detailing his experiences, including the fact no-one had driven it other than him and that in 1940 or 1941 Rolls-Royces' Willesden works carried out an overhaul and re-painted the chassis. He finishes off by saying that he has now bought a smaller car – a Rover 90. There is also a letter dated 4 February 1960 detailing its sale which, including Road Fund Licence, totalled £437/8 shillings. More recently there are hand-written notes from 27 October 2003 to 8 January 2015 detailing jobs carried out, including adding anti-freeze, swapping places with an Alvis and, on 7 February 2006, 'driving 10 laps around the farm.' Offering a more unusual body design this more unusual 3 ½-litre makes an attractive proposition but will require light re-commissioning. Property from a deceased estate. £60,000 - 80,000 Vendor Score Total: 62/100 Bidders should note that the automated 100-point Seller's Assessment is provided by each Seller at the point of consignment using the guidelines below, and is not provided, assessed or verified by Bonhams MPH.
