ARMSTRONG MT500 (NOT Armstrong Siddeley)
Ex-Military bike released from service in 1986, so registered on an ‘E’ plate. I’ve owned the bike since April 2017. Very Reliable and kept in good working order. MOT’d in May and passed without any issues or advisories. Almost new chunky Tyres give it a great look. Wheels are straight and true. It has a chrome round headlight, NOT the square binnacle normally associated with these bikes. Personally, I think that it looks better. These bikes have the indestructible Rotax 500 engine which is a real thumper. They are a kick start, NOT electric. I’ve also put a second side stand on the R/H side stand on it for ease of starting it, as the kick start is on the L/H side. And the side stand is in the way.
It’s showing 17,000 miles but I think that is not a correct reading. I suspect the clocks have been changed at some point in its 35-40 year history. And at that age it’s about the condition not the mileage.
It’s Red, not green. Obvious from the images, but people think that all MT’s are green. I believe it has always been red and served in Northern Ireland, where green vehicles were shot at. So there are a handful of black and red MT’s that were ‘camouflaged’.
I also have copies of the MOD Technical Handbook and the Operating Information Manual. Chapter 4 ‘DESTRUCTION OF EQUIPMENT’ makes interesting reading. These bikes were not sold to the public. But the MOD off-loaded them in the mid / late 80’s.
Reducing my collection. It’s only done a couple of hundred miles in the past 18 months or so. And it needs using. The bike located in South Yorkshire.
If you are looking for a unique, twin shock, trials bike with a big engine then this could be the one.
