Offered for sale a very rare bus indeed. This is a genuine 1956 bus that would have been built in the original Wolfsburg factory in West Germany. The bus left the factory on 8th March 1956 and this can be confirmed by the all important birth certificate from the Stiftung Auto museum that comes with the vehicle. This is a genuine Kombi built and supplied to the German market from new and not an export.
The bus has been locally owned to us for many years and undergone an enormous restoration. This includes a bare metal strip down with any rotten panels being professionally replaced. The bus has had a rotisserie restoration and 100% stripped of every single component underneath. This is a very involved restoration that has taken many years and is not to be confused / compared with the quick restorations that are seen all too often. The underside of the bus is as clean as the top half and has been painted in body colour paint. This is a bus rebuilt to serve another 60+ years of service and not a bus that will require another restoration in a few years time!
Reconditioned 1641cc engine (The VW Engine Company) fitted having covered just a handful of miles, New Wolfsburg West Fuel Tank with retrofitted working fuel gauge and sender unit. Reconditioned IRS Gearbox (Rebuilt by John Walklett) and brand new Independent Rear Suspension kit installed at great expense. Brand new 12V wiring loom, fuse box etc. Year correct ribbed bumpers painted two tone to match and full width bench seat with adjustable brackets. Working 12V Semaphores with flashing LED lights for additional safety. Many original features carefully retained. The bus is so early that it even features a ‘Barn Door’ style gearbox cradle, a big talking point amongst enthusiasts.
Full width sliding sunroof retrofitted during restoration to make the vehicle extra special especially on hot summer days. The rear of the bus is currently a blank canvas as we want to allow the new owner to choose the upholstery colours and interior layout which we will build from scratch.
We specialise in the build and installation of bespoke interiors on these vehicles and are happy to work with you to create your dream interior. This is as close as you can get to ‘new’ for a bus that is 60+ years old and rest assured that with a brand new interior, you will be the very first to enjoy the bus on its new lease of life.
