1930 Alvis Silver Eagle 16.95 Clubman DHC For Sale
The first six-cylinder model from Alvis made its appearance in 1927. The 14. 75 Six displaced 1870cc and offered flexibility and smooth running. These were the objectives of the six-cylinder model, rather than increased performance.
Towards the end of 1928 the model became the 16. 95, with the engine size increased to 2148cc, which gave a noticeably more powerful performance with 80 mph being available with light, sporting coachwork fitted.
In the Spring of 1929, the model was renamed the ‘Silver Eagle’. A short chassis sports version was introduced later that year and from mid-1930 the Silver Eagle models benefited from a lowered chassis and wider track, giving improved handling, While Sports versions featured triple SU carburettors.
Supplied new by Vincents of Reading, this Silver Eagle was fitted with Clubman’s Drophead Coupe coachwork by Cross and Ellis and registered to a Miss K. M Crispe. This lady was clearly an enthusiastic driver, as she specified the triple carburettor setup and servo brakes. There is a copy on file of an extract from the original order from Vincents of Reading dated 21st July 1930.
The car was to pass through several owners before being laid up in 1962 in need of major work.
In 2002 it was located and rescued by a gentleman in Cheltenham who undertook a full restoration. Offered for sale again in 2014, the father of the present owner acquired the car and also lavished much care upon it. The restoration is substantiated by a vast number of detailed photographs.
An overdrive has been fitted which allows for relaxed cruising on longer journeys and just recently the clutch has been replaced, along with the renewal of the cylinder head gasket.
This fine Alvis is presented in extremely good order and is reputed to be the sole example with this handsome Drophead Coupe coachwork, of only 3 built.
Five extensive files of documentation accompany the car, including many photos illustrating the restoration in progress.
