On behalf of the owner we are very pleased to offer for sale this beautiful Rover 6. The car was originally built in 1907 for Rev Edward Cyril Raban and an early photograph shows the young vicar and his bride heading off in the car for their honeymoon. The car has number of extras including a windscreen and a hood. It stayed in his ownership until 1950.

The Rover Cycle Company was very successful with their 'Safety Bicycle' and in 1904 they began experimenting with the internal combustion engine. Designer Edmund Lewis was recruited from Daimler and designed the Rover 8 which was followed by the Rover 6 a few months later.” Some 2300 Rover 6’s were manufactured at the company's Coventry factory between 1905 and 1912 and around 18 survive in the UK with a further 6 overseas.

The car is powered by water cooled 780cc single cylinder, side valve engine with the rear wheels driven through a three-speed gearbox and prop-shaft to the back axle. The engine, clutch housing and gear box is a single aluminium casting. Ignition is by trembler coil although provision is made for fitting a magneto. The wooden chassis is reinforced with steel plates suspended on semi-elliptic leaf springs. It was advertised as, “The most reliable and cheapest car in the world. – even a lady can drive it!”

Registration number DU 1644 was built in 1907 with chassis number 804 and engine number A1328. The car has been authenticated by the Veteran Car Club (Certificate number 507).

The car was originally restored in the 1950’s by Keystone Garage Limited, Bournemouth followed by a further restoration in the 1990’s. In recent years much work has been carried out and has attended a number Veteran Car Club events including the ‘Creepy Crawly Rally’ in Bedfordshire (2018) and in Norfolk (2019). The car is painted British Racing Green with yellow wheels and has cream coloured leather upholstery. The car drives very smoothly through the three-speed gear box and cruises at around 18 - 20 mph. On a warm sunny day, this is Edwardian motoring at its best!

For a video of the car running and quick walk around please ask.
