In 1940, the American army decided to equip themselves with a lightweight reconnaissance vehicle. They called on the Bantam Car Company based in Pennsylvania and both Willys and Ford were involved in making their own prototypes for this project. The model selected by the US army in October 1941 was produced by Willys and called the MB. However, once the United States joined the war after Pearl Harbour in December 1941, the army decided they needed to be supplied with reconnaissance vehicles from at least two different suppliers. They chose Ford, who built the same vehicle as Willys but which was called the GPW. This small reconnaissance vehicle quickly became known as the 'Jeep'. The origin of the name came from the sound of saying the letters GP (for General Purpose). Fast and practical, it became the " all-round vehicle " for the American army.
The Ford GPW in the collection was acquired by André Lurton in 1999. He had a very personal attachment to this vehicle. In fact, in 1944 after enlisting at the age of 20 in the Guyenne battalion, he became the driver for Commandant Bartet and later Commandant Revol. André Lurton was particularly impressed by this ingenious type of vehicle and writes in his memoires of having 17 punctures in 23 days during the campaign in Germany. This helps to make our example a very special Jeep, steeped in the rich history of its owner.

Note to the buyers:
We inform buyers that all the vehicles in the collection have been rarely used during the last years as they are part of a museum collection. They are sold as presented and therefore require at the minimum recommissioning before being driven on the public roads.
